Login using x11 missing

i get that xorg is old, but at least it’s not nearly as buggy as wayland which in no way is ready for prime time imo

the login screen allowed me to choose between x11 and wayland, but now that i tried wayland, the choice is gone

how do i get it back?

Wayland is very much ready for prime time. Many people have already been using it for years without any problems, and I myself have been using it without any problems ever since we switched from Plasma 5 to Plasma 6.

X11 on the other hand is no longer being maintained, it’s got plenty of vulnerabilities, and it works very inefficiently.

If you had read the first two posts on the Announcements > Stable Updates thread, then you would have known that already. :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Furthermore, People who continue running Plasma on X11 are on borrowed time, because KDE have already announced quite a while ago that X11 support will be completely dropped in Plasma 6.8.

your condescending attitude isn’t appreciated, at all, especially given that your remarks appear to be very wrong regarding wayland’s reediness for prime time, much less it’s popularity, the numbers of which may actually be declining

why it’s being forced on all of us is an interesting question that Lunduke attempts to answer…

Half of Linux Users Stick with X11, Despite Years of Wayland Being Forced

Wayland has been the default for several years on the largest Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.), yet Wayland usage has actually decreased since 2024.

and you had the audacity to choose your own post as the solution?

The solution is to read the announcement and the FAQ before updating.

That’s actually not true, at least for Arch – Wayland is more popular and gap between Wayland and Xorg is only getting bigger over time

Look at your own attitude in your opening post. And if you call “encouraging you to take responsibility” condescending, then you must have very long toes.

Ah, a link to an X11 propaganda piece, written one year ago.

Brian Lunduke… :joy:

As for why it’s “being forced upon you”, here’s why…

  1. As I wrote already, X11 is no longer being maintained. Yes, there is an experimental fork of it, but they’ll have a lot of cleaning up to do if they want to make it better. Wayland on the other hand has by now been around for 17 years already, and is very mature.

  2. KDE Plasma now defaults to Wayland — with provisional continued support for X11 for now — because the code for supporting both display server protocols was becoming too difficult to maintain in one code base, and so the X11 code base was split off. Furthermore, Plasma 6.8 will completely abandon X11 support.

  3. GNOME is already exclusively Wayland now as of GNOME 49. It doesn’t even support X11 anymore.

  4. Most of the advanced distributions are now already Wayland-only. A few are still supporting X11 because they are more conservative.

It is the solution. You asked us how to get X11 back, and my post tells you exactly how you can. :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Vitriol doesn’t make good public relations. :man_shrugging:

Conversation is going nowhere. :man_shrugging:

That is actually impossible, given all major desktops are moving to Wayland regardless of your beliefs… oh I see the Lunduke garden path factor… oh well.

My Household has 3 computers running wayland with no issues for close to 2 years. 2 have just recently upgraded to Manjaro stable and one is running Manjaro testing.

@Aragorn chose his post as the solution, because, it is THE Solution.

I’m approaching 4 years of using Plasma Wayland full-time, first on my old GigaByte desktop PC, and then on its replacement, a Beelink mini-PC (since November 2023).

In the early days, screen recording on Wayland was an issue, but that was fixed around 3 years ago.

I experienced a lot more issues with Plasma on X11 than I’ve had with Wayland.

The post by @Aragorn gave you the solution.

Did you bother to read it before blindly making accusations?
