Live usb boot stuck

Hello, I have a desktop PC with a Ryzen 9 5900X and a Radeon 7600 RX with a working XFCE Manjaro installation which boots just fine. But, when I try to boot this same machine using a USB Stick (tried different flavors, xfce, KDE, i3), it just get stuck in different phases of the booting process (Reached Target Network is one example of where it get stuck, but not always in this step), I also tried free and proprietary drivers.

I’m not very good at Linux, can anyone help me diagnose? My endgoal is to start a fresh manjaro installation in a new ssd that I will swap in this machine.

Note 1: I created the USB installer using both “dd” and “ventoy”. Secure boot, legacy usb and fast boot are disabled.

Note 2: the working installation was done when I had an older gpu (don’t remember if it was the Nvidia or the Amd one, but definitely wasn’t the 7600)

Note 3: in default boot I can’t access tty (the screen freeze), but if I try to boot with ‘nomodeset’ it goes further in the boot process, but fails to run lightdm. In this situation I can access tty

Just a hunch, try switching tty (so your screen goes black), and then change the hdmi cable to your motherboard hdmi port and see if there is anything alive there.

Thank you for answering. My system does not have on-board graphics (but the motherboard has a hdmi port), should it work anyway?

Also if I don’t use nomodeset the pc is just frozen, doing alt+ctrl+f4 does nothing.

Whats your hypothesis?

I tried pressing alt+ctrl+f4 and switching the hdmi to the motherboard’s but nothing happened.

The cooler start spinning faster after the screen freeze

Can you give us at least a summary of your system info?

sudo inxi -v7azy

I did this in the working installation:

It freezes here with this artifact in the top, the screen is green, but the colors gets normal if I swap the monitor. Tried booting with the second monitor only and didn’t work

Did you verify that the checksum match the downloaded ISO and also the written ISO to USB?

By doing “acpi=off” it went farther in the process, stopped here but it’s not frozen. I can access tty now, checked lightdm (systemctl status lightdm) and it’s active.

Yes, I did

Did you try to restart it?

systemctl restart display-manager.service

It makes me think that the GPU is not fully initialized by the UEFI for some reason. Could be wrong.

I tried now I it does nothing, but it say it’s active. Doing “anxi -G” does not show the Radeon driver.

If I try opening i3 it says it cannot open display

Trying “sudo mhwd -a nonfree 0300” says that the driver is installed

Interesting… please share the link or full name of the ISO file. Probably the kernel on the ISO, so its version is lower than 5.15?

This GPU is supported only since 5.16: AMD Navi 33 [Radeon RX 7700S/7600S/7600M XT] Framebuffer, like the console is supported anyway.

I tried manjaro-i3-22.0-minimal-230104-linux61.iso and manjaro-kde-22.1.3-minimal-230529-linux61.iso and manjaro-xfce-22.1.3-minimal-230529-linux61.iso.

But only the i3 one with acpi=off I might try the XFCE later.

When I do sudo inxi -v7azy it detects that there is a GPU, but show driver=n/a.

Thank you for helping me

That’s really strange. Could you check if the module was loaded?

lsmod | grep amd

Eventually load it:

sudo modprobe -v amdgpu

Check if the driver has been mapped to the GPU:

inxi -Gazy

There must be a reason why the kernel doesn’t detect the GPU correctly.

I get this error "could not insert ‘amdgpu’: no such device

When I use the XFCE image it detects the gpu more detailed, but still can’t ‘modprobe -v amdgpu’ same error

The curious thing is that the current installation is working flawless.

sudo lspci -nn -kk -vvvv -d 1002:7480
sudo dmidecode -t slot

If you have a internet connection, please add a pipe to upload it:

<your_command> | curl -F'file=@-' https://0x0.st

Like that:

journalctl --boot 0 | curl -F'file=@-' https://0x0.st

Share the short link here then.

I was avoiding this option but what I did was swap the gpu to an older one (it worked) . I’m installing the os and upgrading it right now to a newer kernel.

After that I’ll swap back the gpu and hope for the best.

Thank you a lot for helping me

This strategy worked. Used an older card do install the os, upgrade the kernel to 6.4, swaped back the card, it booted normally
