Linux Refugee Crisis: My 5GHz WiFi Just Declared Independence

Mini-introduction (not important):
G’day mates, I’m one of the fresh migrants for Linux’s 2026 intake of refugees! :partying_face:

I’ve been running Manjaro (KDE Plasma, Wayland, Linux 6.18, EXT4) for several weeks since I conquered the drivers, and documented my journey along the way with public gists.

Backstory ― How rclone and Dolphin team up to break my 5GHz wifi (and my sanity):

I was copy-pasting a file into my rclone cloud in the Dolphin file explorer, and it was being slow. (This is basically my only gripe with Linux after all these weeks, but perhaps I just need to optimised my rclone-Dolphin system somehow.)

Except this time, it wasn’t just being slow, Dolphin properly locked up. I tried closing rclone correctly, the terminal refused. I tried force quitting the rclone process… my cloud drive remained mounted. I tried unmounting the cloud, Dolphin refused. Crikey, I guess I have no choice but to reboot the computer.

The problem becomes apparent:

Suddenly, I can’t connect to any 5GHz wifi networks at all! They show up as discoverable, but I just can’t connect to them! The error message being:

Secrets were required, but not provided.

This happens even after I delete my saved network connection (via the GUI) and attempt to reconnect, typing the password and everything.

Oddly, it seems to connect to my legacy 2.4GHz personal hotspot just fine.

What it’s not:

My wifi card is working fine. I dual booted back into macOS, and there’s no issue with the wifi. Furthermore, I pulled out Manjaro LiveUSB, booted that up, and was also able to connect to the wifi correctly.

Obviously, this also means the issue isn’t a Manjaro driver incompatibility (just in case you assumed I hallucinated working wifi for the past several weeks and was browsing the web in my imagination).

Speculation:

This leads me to conclude that something is broken… Surely rclone didn’t break my wifi drivers! And I did politely ask Manjaro to reboot and patiently obliged during “Backstory” section above… so surely no files were corrupted if no sudden power terminations occurred…

But then again, perhaps my rclone mount was seizing something about the wifi connection and rebooting the computer left some network configuration files in some kind of locked state? Perhaps my driver or its configurations have had their permission flags erroneously overwritten to a less privileged state?

Potential solutions?

Maybe there’s a way to reinstall all networking related files, overwriting their permissions to defaults or something?

I’d really rather not reinstall Manjaro from scratch, but ultimately that will fix the problem if nothing else. If I do, I’m definitely reformatting to Btrfs and ditching EXT4!

Call for help:

I tried searching the web, but the web results are constantly irrelevant, often assuming the person is trying to set up wifi for the first time and concluding driver incompatibilities. I’ve also tried AI troubleshooting, but they’re taking me on wild goose chases, asking me to endlessly report logs and forgetting which solutions we already tried and failed.

So here I am, calling for troubleshooting assistance!

Welcome to Manjaro forum @SulleyBear

Please post more information about system hardware:

A warm Welcome from me too! :vulcan_salute:

In addition to @nikgnomic’s post, here’s my quick guide on proper code formatting:

[Mini How-To] format code or command output

Select and copy all the text in the Terminal window (minus the prompt, if you are using zsh).
Then paste the output in between two lines containing three backticks
```
or three tildes
~~~

Or:
Copy & paste, then highlight the pasted text and click the </> button at the top of the reply window (easier for smaller outputs).

Also note that the command provided gives a privacy-filtered output.

Cheers! :wink:

@nikgnomic and @BG405 , thanks for the welcome!

Edit: Oh thank goodness this forum makes that enormous code block scrollable by default, I was worried!

Edit 2: Sorry for the duplicate reply, it turns out that the privacy-filtered output wasn’t quite private enough, exposing my personal name via my Bluetooth device pairings :man_facepalming:

Very well spotted! :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

We’ll have to contact the developer about that one. I think it’s the only instance anyone has reported. He’s a member here, but I haven’t been able to find the post or message referencing his username so far. :thinking:

Also, thanks for the feedback re. the scrollable window. I might add that to my mini-HowTo. :+1:

Edit: Found him, may need to contact him via other means though as @h2-1 hasn’t been on here for a while, but may get an email notification. :smiley:

Oh wow! Thanks mate, you’re a legend!

I imagine heaps of people name their Bluetooth headphones and speakers with their name as I naively have done… I probably should stop doing that! :man_facepalming:

Did you see the thread from a couple of days ago with a similar problem on another Mac? The network card seems to be the same. Maybe the solution is also the same: Macbook Wifi - password not working - #7 by 6x12

Edit:
@BG405 The inxi repo seems to be this: smxi/inxi: inxi is a full featured CLI system information tool. It is available in most Linux distribution repositories, and does its best to support the BSDs. - Codeberg.org. Probably the best possible place to raise an issue is there

Thank you, yes I did see that thread, too. The problem is a little different, though: That person was trying to get their wifi working for the first time. I had already used that strategy (below) to set it up over a month ago. This is the code I use to get it going without rebooting, but also ensuring it’s persistent upon reboots:

sudo rmmod brcmfmac_wcc
sudo rmmod brcmfmac
echo "options brcmfmac feature_disable=0x82000" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/brcmfmac.conf
sudo modprobe brcmfmac feature_disable=0x82000

Ok. And is there any message in the logs (journalctl)?

Sorry, I kept reading and reading until I got suspicious and realised this is logging from bootup and beyond (hehe, ooops). But I think these entries are the most suspicious:

❯ journalctl
...
<EDIT: redacted, irrelevant log output from a month ago>

Check out this and this.

@h2-1 I believe, but they’re not active.

Are these errors before/during/after you got the wifi working with the workaround mentioned? They’re from over a month ago. Is there anything in your logs from around the time the transfer bummed out?

@6x12
Thanks for the tip! Since iwconfig isn’t on my system, rather than installing it I went with the alternative command in the second link you posted

Before I tried those solutions, I wanted to know the current setting from what I was changing:

❯ iw dev wlp3s0 info | grep txpower
        txpower 31.00 dBm

Okay, so 31 dBm, but really that’s the setting that “auto” decided on. If I revert, I think I should revert to txpower auto, probably.

The person in the first link experimented that 20 dBm seemed to work well before things became unstable again… so I’ll try that:

❯ sudo iw dev wlp3s0 set txpower fixed 2000
❯ iw dev wlp3s0 info | grep txpower
        txpower 20.00 dBm

It didn’t work… I turn off the wifi, turn it on again, my network appears, and connecting to it presents “Incorrect password” and a prompt to type it in again. I can repeat, but if I press cancel, we get the “Secrets were required, but not provided.” message.

Perhaps I failed to notice this before, but at least it means the authentication is failing. So that might narrow down the troubleshooting.

Anyway, just to be sure, I tried again at the even lower power of 10 dBm:

❯ sudo iw dev wlp3s0 set txpower fixed 1000
❯ iw dev wlp3s0 info | grep txpower
        txpower 10.00 dBm

Which also didn’t work.

Ultimately, I’m reassured slightly, because if this did fix the problem I would have been very confused why the LiveUSB doesn’t need it whilst my on-device installation does :sweat_smile:

Oh geeze! Thank you for paying attention. I didn’t realise my journalctl was cached back to May! I thought it was on the RAM caching from when I last turned it on, doh! :man_facepalming: I thought the times were out! Please completely ignore that post, I might edit it out since it’s misleading.

Here’s the new log, where I suspect these filtered results should provide some clues (especially the last block):

> journalctl --since="27 hours ago"

Mod edit: Consecutive posts merged.

i did a quick search for your error message.
Have you checked to see if your router might have stopped liking you? Maybe it blacklisted your MAC address?

It could be a channel issue. As per Mark 1 does not support Channels 12 or 13 on 2.4GHz spectrum · Issue #31 · MycroftAI/mycroft-wifi-setup · GitHub

Best to confirm which channel your SSID is using BEFORE testing this so you know for certain.

Sorry, was very late last night.

Here is more on the BCM4302, helps to understand the broader issues: Making sure you're not a bot!
I remember once using a script on github to get a 2017 with touchbar to work, so also have a look here since it addresses the various points mentioned in the bug report above: macbook-bcm43602-linux/README.md at main · animatek/macbook-bcm43602-linux · GitHub

  1. Copy a known-good firmware configuration file for the Broadcom card.
  2. Set your wireless regulatory domain to Japan (JP) so channels work correctly.
  3. Reload the Broadcom kernel module so it picks up the new settings.
  4. Persist the regulatory domain setting across reboots.

Use one of these community-tested configs:

In case this might be relevant:

There is a note on the Arch Wiki about the iwd backend refusing MAC address randomisation, which can apparently result in communication being terminated;

See also the notes that suggest disabling random MAC addresses as a possible workaround:

Thanks! I assume that’s not possible though? Because the Manjaro LiveUSB connects to the target SSID perfectly…

But if I was being blacklisted, that must mean my configuration is different from the LiveUSB one right? Perhaps my config files have somehow changed to use a fake MAC address persistently and the router is blocking that one?

Let me know if you have a theory!

You got it:
My SSID is connecting (or at least trying to) on channel 44 (5.22 GHz), and fails.
But when connecting to my smartphone’s 2.4 GHz hotspot, it succeeds.

So it’s not matching up to the problem in the thread you’ve described, but perhaps you know of a parallel problem for this inverse scenario?

Yes, that’s my machine!

It seemed strange to me at the time, but I set up my country code=US because that’s the way my macOS had it configured. I’ve never been to the US, I bought my machine in Australia, and now I’m living in Japan… so I was surprised macOS didn’t have my country code as Australia or Japan, but I just assumed Apple had a hardware reason for that configuration :man_shrugging:

Thank you, I’ll give it a try and report back!

Thanks, this looks promising! It’s far more comprehensive than the mechanism I was using… I’ll try this too and report back.

Thank you! Another good idea to test. I’ll report back!

my boring Fritzbox has an option where you can allow or deny connections to new/unknown MACs, so if randomize the MAC and have activated an similar option, the connection will be refused.
The archwiki suggest using a low channel like around 40 may help.
Maybe check also the security protocolls (wpa2/wpa3)
If none of this helps, i’m out of clues…
