Did this just now)
I know GSmartControl had, some years ago, problems with the m.2 disks, but now it would be ok.
You can try with the smartctl command in the console:
sudo smartctl -t /dev/nvme0n1
and after a few minutes,
sudo smartctl -a /dev/nvme0n1
If smartctl doesn’t work too, maybe you could check the disk with some tool from the vendor Smartbuy (I don’t know it, so I can’t be more specific, sorry).
Anyway, check the other HDD (Toshiba) with GSmartControl/smartctl (at least a short test).
More exactly, see if the RAW values of the ‘Reallocated_Sector_Count
’, ‘Spin_Retry_Count
’, and ‘Current_Pending_Sector
’ properties are ZERO; otherwise your disc is at risk of breaking.
I don’t know for sure if the lag problem in your system is a disk problem (mine is just a suspect), but it’s still a good idea to check your disks from time to time.
Unplug the HDD and boot, see if it solves anything instead of going through all this. Smart could still be read even if the program doesn’t know your disk.
EDIT: Share sudo inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --width
to provide good system information for support, it will give more info than above (edit the initial post where you already posted inxi info).
Do sudo smartctl -t /dev/… takes only max 5 minutes.
Disconnected all cables, open the pc, unplug, close, reconnected… how long does it take?
I don’t understand anything.
Is it a question or a statement?
How long does what take? To disconnect the HDD?
To disconnect the HDD have you to open the case of pc?
If you have, like me, your PC under your desk, it’s not very easy to do, don’t you think?
In any case, checking the health of the discs is always advisable.
Then, it will be up to @HorseyMD to evaluate what to do.
If you want the reason at all costs, no problem. I close it here.
I believe I have given some good advice.

This command gave me an error, I’ll try to unplug my HDD
the command I gave should have provided better info. Do the command I gave, update your message.
In your system settings, rendering backend, is it configured to opengl? if not, configure it for opengl.
In your display settings, is your refresh rate correctly configured?
If this still doesn’t work, you can try repacing kwin with kwinft, it’s a faster and more responsive re-write of kwin, but it’s also a beta product so you may experience some issues when using it.
If all else fails, you can either switch to testing or wait until the stable branch of manjaro updates to use the nvidia 490 driver series (should be fairly soon i think 1 or 2 weeks; if you can’t wait, just switch to testing), and use wayland instead of X
Or just use another desktop environment, by the sound of it you’re new to linux and you want something similar to windows, there’s a lot of environments that can provide you with what you want, KDE is just the most popular one, you could try XFCE, Cinnamon or Mate for example.
I’m sorry for sounding stupid, I’m not sure which command you’re referring to as it seems I ran all the commands you’ve been referring to…I unplugged my HDD right now and I’ll see what smart control says
All of these commands threw back the following error
smartctl 7.2 2020-12-30 r5155 [x86_64-linux-5.14.10-1-MANJARO] (local build)

This is the information output from SmartControl GUI, it still says UNKNOWN DEVICE

SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED
I’m starting to think that the SSD might be the issue because booting does seem to take a bit of time. Not too long, maybe 10-11 seconds on the Manjaro start screen. With how light Manjaro is compared to WIndows, I’d expect quicker, but maybe I’m just being unrealistic
Sorry, I forgot an argument:
sudo smartctl -t short -a /dev/nvme0n1
I’m referring exactly to the command I gave. I gave only one.
//EDIT: anyway if you successfully got your SMART result now, whatever.
I’m sorry, I ran it without the sudo it seems! My fault…
Here’s the new output:
