Lib32-audit lib32-libcap preventing update (pacman)

Hi. I’m very new to these forums, but have been running Manjaro on my laptop for several years now. I am on my own personal laptop system where I am the “admin” as it where. I’m not a perfect genius and will never claim to be. I recently tried to run sudo pacman -Syu, and ran into an error. Here is my output for that:

I also checked these lib32 packages via pactree, and here’s the results of both of those.

Both of those involve Hyprland and Steam. I do not wish to remove Steam, and uninstalling my DM is obviously not ideal. I thought it would initially just be a case of waiting for the lib32 to be updated… but they have been moved to the AUR. The next thing I tried was to run yay -Syu, which runs seemingly normally, but then it just repeats the same exact “Replace x with y? [Y’n]” prompts shown when I run sudo pacman -Syu over and over until it runs into this error:

I hope this in combination with the system specs in my profile are enough info to help a solution be found and help the problem be identified. I will provide more info if needed. Also, if this is affecting more users than me and I’m not crazy, that’d also be good to know.

Edit: Solved. Removed the lib32 packages and certain applications requiring them (my install of Steam in this case). Ran sudo pacman -Syu successfully afterwards and was able to run yay -Syu afterwards. Steam runs without requiring the mentioned lib32 packages after being reinstalled. Steam retains all previous data prior to uninstall and reinstall. Thank you all.

Mod edit:- Title chhanged for brevity. No charge.

I also run Hyprland and Steam. I don’t have either of those lib32 packages. Try removing them, see if pacman complains.

Looking at the dependencies of steam and systemd on the arch page (sorry, I’m on a phone now) removing should be possible. Otherwise arch wouldn’t have dropped the support for them.
That is of course if you installed steam from the repos. If not, it can be more complicated.

Pacman did complain, a lot, but I eventually got to this error here:

To be honest, I installed Steam a long time ago when I was less knowing of Linux. I will try to delete it and reinstall it.

Why was lib32-systemd being uninstalled???

You want to use pactree -r to see reverse dependencies. Without it, it shows the packages it depends on, not what depends on it.

Dozens of unneeded lib32 packages were dropped from the Arch repos to the AUR recently. They should be orphans on your system.

@ajgringo619

Ok, so was part of the pactree -r result I shared earlier, but it was one of the many nested lib32 dependencies. It started with me trying to pacman -Rns lib32-audit, and then that erred due to lib32-pam needing it, which erred because lib32-libcap requiring that, which eventually led to lib32-systemd. Thankfully, the trail did not include Hyprland, because if it did I probably would have given up. After deleting the lib32 packages that depended on the earlier lib32s (and Steam), I was able to run sudo pacman -Syu properly with no problems. I am also running yay -Syu to make sure that those packages are up to date.

@Yochanan

Sorry, should have clarified, I did use pactree -r, the output I showed is the result of pactree -r whenever I posted pactree outputs.

OK, glad you got it working. Be very careful running pacman -Rns; pacman -R is usually enough.

Thank you. I was able to get Steam up and running again, thankfully with all of my installed games intact. I will mark your mention of running Hyprland and Steam without these lib32 packages as the solution and add the fix in an edit.
