Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 Gen 1 screen goes black randomly

Hello dear Manjaro users!

I setup a new laptop, a Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 Gen 1 with Manjaro GNOME (see system information below) and unfortunately I experience random “crashes”. The display goes black with no particular reason, the computer continues to run (e.g. sound continues to play back) but keyboard/mouse/touchscreen/trackpoint input is broken at that point.

Apart from that everything works actually flawlessly. I am super happy with the machine other than the crashes of course. :wink:

I checked with journalctl and found this:

Sometimes it is possible to just close the lid wait a couple of seconds and reopen it which will eventually bring back display output (sometimes with graphical glitches like flickering etc.). However, keyboard/mouse/touchscreen/trackpoint stay broken and the only option I know of at that point is to actually reboot the machine.

This happens at random when the machine is idling or under load.

I read a bit about similar issues here and there and it sounds to me as if waiting for the next Kernel is my best option. Or what do you guys think?

Many for thanks for your time and expertise in advance!

This is my system:
I run Wayland 1.21.0-2 and PipeWire 1:0.3.63-1 with WirePlumber 0.4.13-1.

@brahma So sorry for the formatting and thanks for leading me the way. I fixed it now and added inxi -zav7 output at the end of the post too. As soon s I get another crash I will add journalctl -b-1 -p4 --no-pager output as well!

Thanks for your help!

@brahma I just had another crash…

Here’s the output of journalctl -b-1 -p4 --no-pager:
https://pastebin.com/ixwNNvDv

ok, so there are some core dumps from ‘gnome character’ …
and also these errors:

Jan 08 17:44:29 amadeus-4 kernel: tpm tpm0: A TPM error (256) occurred attempting get random

related to tpm, which could be resolved by disabling it in bios, or enabling it if its disabled…

but comparing these pastebin logs to the logs above, there is not a single mention of amdgpu errors like in those above … :thinking:

also you have a messed up journal so clear it too:

sudo journalctl --rotate
sudo journalctl -m --vacuum-time=1s

you are also running on wayland, so switch to xorg / x11 and try with it, and report back…

@brahma Thank you so much for all the advice and help! Much appreciated! <3

So, I enabled the security chip and TPM in the BIOS and worked with the computer like that the entire day. I was unable to boot with secure boot enabled, so I put it back on disabled. I saw and still see an entire armada of TPM error (256) log statements with the security chip and TPM enabled, like …

There were also no amdgpu errors anymore.

X or Wayland seem to make no difference in relation to the TPM errors or the crashes.

Is fwupd or gnome-firmware installed ?

1 Like

@banjo Thanks for mentioning fwupd!

I updated the BIOS but with enabled security chip and TPM the TPM errors remained just the same. I therefore disabled the secure chip and TPM in the BIOS and see no more TPM errors and also did not have any crashes so far.

Sorry that this might be sort of a necrobump, but have you solved your issue? Mine lasted 3 days, and then I pacman -Syu after that and it happened again. The description of my problem matches yours and your solution seemed to have worked for 3 glorious days.

So sorry I did not mark this as resolved. Did that now.

I have updated the BIOS a couple times (1.55 currently but I just saw that there’s a 1.63 update available that I am downloading right now) since and also reset it to system defaults each time. Since then, I have not had any of the afore mentioned crashes and also no more TPM errors.

This is my current setup:
