Lenovo Legion 5i 2021 boots to black screen after installing NVIDIA

I recently got myself a 2021 Lenovo Legion 5i, i7 11800h, RTX 3060. I installed Manjaro from the latest ISO and if during setup I choose to install the proprietary GPU drivers it doesn’t boot. It gets stuck on a black screen with a non-blinking cursor, top left.

So in order to boot to a working desktop I choose to install nouveau during installation. Once booted into the system I proceed to install nvidia, nvidia-utils, lib32-nvidia-utils, nvidia-prime. Then I set nvidia_drm.modeset=1 kernel parameter in grub, update grub, open up mkinitcpio.conf and allow for early loading of i915, nvidia, nvidia_modeset, nvidia_uvm and nvidia_drm. Then after mkinitcpio -P I reboot.

To a black screen.

Now, I have also tried Endeavour and Vanilla Arch, but they both boot to a black screen after installing NVIDIA.

FWIW, the only distribution that I managed to get working on the laptop is the Fedora-based Nobara Project.

Any idea what I’m missing to get Arch running on this laptop?

Can you post inxi -Fza ?

Sure, thing, forgot about that. Just edited my original post.

You should have a look at:

section dual graphic cards.

I used the gui of mhwd to install the nvidia-prime package, which to my knowledge is the same thing… Sadly, no success.

is secure boot disabled in bios
fast boot disabled in bios - you may not have this option
fast startup disabled in windows
ahci enabled in bios

Yes, it is.

No such option in my version of BIOS.

I didn’t install Windows on this machine… Yet.

Yes.

I would start with the BIOS Update for Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11 (64-bit) - Legion 5, Legion 5 Pro, Legion 7 - Lenovo Support RO

Do not enable early KMS for the Nvidia … try with nomodeset from the Grub boot menu by adding that instead of quiet

Try X11 instead of Wayland.

Is there no other way to update the BIOS without having to go through an entire Windows installation?

did you try the 5.19 kernel when you had installed manjaro?

I’m not sure… I may have missed it.

the default in manjaro is 5.15 and in the inxi output from the nobara linux you are running the 5.19

I see your point, but I have also tried Vanilla Arch, and that installs 5.19 as well, if I’m not mistaken.

i see … when you booted into manjaro usb, were you able to boot using the proprietary boot option?

I don’t remember if I tried that option.

Yes there is USB Booting | Hiren's BootCD PE you still need to download the iso. If you use Ventoy is quite easy. Also, maybe worth to try latest ISO Release 202209120436 · manjaro-gnome/download · GitHub to test. I would go in verbose mode and see where exactly is hanging when using proprietary drivers.

That didn’t work. However, what did work was adding ibt=off to the grub menu…

I see it was mentioned also here [Solved]"ibt = off" didn't solve the problem with nvidia / Newbie Corner / Arch Linux Forums maybe same model ?

Yeah, well, I don’t know about that.

In my particular case that did the thing and I now have a fully functional system , prime-run works just fine, everything seems to be flawless.
