Latest update did not finish properly — lots of orphans, unusual behaviour

First, let me thank you, whoever is involved in the development of Manjaro OS, for your great work. I love it and have been using it exclusively for several years already.

This is the first time I’ve encountered any issue: the latest system update finished without any notice. I did it using Pamac’s GUI (“Add/remove software”) which usually results in a dialogue screen, often requesting a system restart. This time, after too short a process, the software centre window simply closed.

Things seem to work as intended, but when for an unrelated reason I was listing orphans on my laptop (pamac list -o) I was presented with a huge list of 99 entries. Seems way too many to me.

Is there any way to re-initiate this update process? GUI or CLI is both fine.

Also, when I eject a previously attached external device (hard drive, DVD, USB …) the icon will remain on the task bar, displaying the most recent device, even if I delete the list of recent devices from system settings. Could this be related, or is it a newly introduced feature?

Thank you in advance to everyone taking the time to read this and help me out!

Hello and welcome to the Forum! I’d like to give you a tip:

It is preferred that you post text output rather than screenshots as this makes it searchable, amongst other things, so it’s best to copy the output, paste it here, highlight it and click the </> button at the top of the reply window.

Doing it this way puts it in a formatted text box, which is best for the Forum.

It will also be helpful if you post some system info, using e.g. inxi -zv8 following the method I just described above.

Cheers!

Thank you for your tips, much appreciated! I was considering pasting the entire list of found orphens but thought it might be too long a list and hence overwhelming.

What I do not understand at all is what inxi -zv8 means and/or how my respective system info would look like. But I will add some info and the full ist in a next step.

I’d rather guess their interrupted upgrade is why they suddenly have dozens of orphans.

In which case they probably dont want to go removing them all.

The above command is short-form, but basically gives all basic system info but masks anything which is personally identifiable such as MAC addresses. That’s the z part; v8 basically sets the verbosity level.

inxi is a tool which was developed some years ago to easily show important system information; I actually interacted with him a few years ago on another forum when he was asking about what features to include.

I think man inxi may be worth a look if you are interested.

Yes, that is exactly what I am thinking. Don’t want to break the system by removing orphans that, in fact, aren’t really orphans at all, so to speak.

So follow my suggestion and begin reinstalling all (native) packages.

We might expect errors, but will rectify as needed.

So, here’s my inxi output:

I’d have to initiate another backup, right? I usually only back up my home, but doing what you suggest seems to need a e. g. Timeshift backup beforehand, wouldn’t you say?

Most if not all of those look like junk actually.

Why?

Before upgrades or installs as a general rule?

This should be the safest of possible package exchanges - you are reinstalling all native packages already installed.

That its to fix things, and why you would want to backup a broken state, being even further considerations.

Take care with language.

  • Backup (something like back-in-time) is useful to take rsync snapshots of your files.
  • Snapshot is a system (not data) backup.

So a Timeshift snapshot will wind you back (system). This would be useful BEFORE your broken upgrade.

A Back-in-Time restoration will bring data back (overwriting any work you’ve been doing). This would be useful if you reinstall and want to bring data back later.

Having taken a closer look at the orphans … was this a very out of date system?
Did you just upgrade to Plasma 6?

If so, aside from any upgrade -issues-, extra maintenance tasks are required.

On top of clearing old packages you would also need to remove old .cache and .config and possibly other data in your HOME directory.

Nope, I regularly update, with only a few days, max one or two weeks, delay.

Sorry to have to ask this, but what is the difference between pacman and pamac?
It keeps confusing me because what I thought was that pamac is Manjaro’s version of pacman and hence would expect the command reading sudo pamac -Syu $(pamac -Qnq)

EDIT: Read up a bit and retract my question. If I understand you correctly, it should be safe to do sudo pacman -Syu $(pacman -Qnq)?

inxi seems quite powerful, thanks for the hint!

Indeed it is; it reveals:

This is likely to be one of the issues here, a fairly significant one in fact. I have 8GB in this machine and doubt I’d get very far without swap.

Running out of available memory is likely what caused the upgrade to fail.

Totally escaped me! So, the entire issue could be due to a lack of sufficient storage and RAM. I will get rid of unneeded files before I’ll do anything else. TYSM for finding and pointing this out!

EDIT: Is there a painless way of establishing swap space on a running system?

You can create a swap file if you don’t want to mess with the partitions. I’m not familiar with that though (I always set up my partitions manually, before installing, including an adequately-sized swap one; I need hibernate to work). I’ll look in to it but maybe someone else here will jump in.
