Laptops with black screen after fresh install of Manjaro Nibia 20.2.1 and video-nvidia

Today I installed Manjaro Nibia KDE edition from zero, booting the ISO version 20.2.1 from an USB drive with Ventoy, on two Acer laptops with hybrid Intel/Nvidia cards.

On both, after remove video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime, install video-nvidia and reboot I got the black screen (with logo). I can change to tty2-tty6 using CTRL-ALT-FN and also can ssh into them from another laptop (this one I am using to post). But no graphics!

I also tried with my external monitors connected to them, one by DP and the other by HDMI. In these cases, I got graphics working but only on the external monitors.

The bizarre part is that then “Display Configuration” shows only the external monitors (as if the laptops doesn’t have a LCD each).

Below “inxi -Fazy” on both laptops and also some screenshots to illustrate.

Appears to be the same problem but still I not found a solution.

Still trying without success…

At least on one laptop (helios) the hybrid driver activates the external monitor on DP after “enable” it on System Settings. On nitro, the enable button does nothing.

Also tried with different kernel versions (5.9 and 5.4) but no luck.

Bellow some info from xrandr running with hybrid driver and with nvidia driver.

Why?

Anyways, this issue is probably relevant for 455.45.01 + Linux 5.10.

I suggest installing video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime and optimus-manager. In “hybrid” mode, external monitors won’t work with the 455.45.01 driver + Linux 5.10 due to the aforementioned issue, so the “nvidia” mode is how you can make use of external monitors.

Because video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime is, in my understanding, a intermediary solution (like bumblebee). Using optimus-manager I think is best go full intel or full nvidia, each one with it’s associated driver.

And does not appears to be kernel related (at least on Manjaro) because I tried with 5.4, 5.9 and 5.10.

After so many reinstalls I could make it work on both laptops!

I made a script to automate some things to my use. After install Manjaro 20.2.1 I just run the below script.

That is not fully correct. video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime can be thought of as being the same as video-nvidia but with extra configuration that lets you use PRIME render offloading and configures PCI-Express runtime power management for the NVIDIA GPU out of the box. You can use optimus-manager even if video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime is installed in mhwd. For these reasons, I would recommend using the video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime.
