Laptop Problems requiring Kernel Paramters

Hi guys,

This might be a big ask and not sure where to turn to as such. I’ve been on and off using my Metabox Edge laptop with different OS’s on it and for any to work when booting I need for the grub default:
acpi_backlight=vendor and pci=noats. I’m not familiar enough to understand exactly what they do to a great deal outside of the grub manual which gives a simple explanation for them. Aside from this, my laptop still seems to struggle at times and I can’t tell if it’s the hardware or using linux OS. This laptop was more or less my first time learning to use different OS’s but it’s getting quite frustrating when the laptop fails to do stuff compared to my desktop i.e. use a HDMI cable (screen glitches and freezes), sometimes it freezes for no reason, each large pacman install breaks the laptop and requires a live USB to fix it (I can’t tell if that’s normal or not given not used to Linux).

With all that as a background, my main question is if there is a way to fix / identify a solution for getting my laptop to be more usable than what it is. I feel I’m missing something in getting the laptop to work or I bought a laptop incompatible with Linux. I believe it to be the later but I’m hopeful it’s because I’m missing stuff for it to work. I’m not sure what ouputs to add to help find out what it could be.

Apart from telling your exact laptop model, you can try installing newer kernels as usually support for new devices are not backported. But that’s just a best practice, not a real solution from problem identification. For that, we need what I said in the first sentence. lshw and lspci output are not enough as each laptop is possibly unique in terms of quirks from its manufacturers
