Laptop freezing

model: asus x540s
cpu: pentium n3700
gpu: unsure, integrated (hd 405?)

so. the laptop is ocasionally freezing, most frequently when playing games. i dont think this is an overheating issue because the laptop is sometimes more hot without freezing.
other distros are also affected, except windows
im not entirely sure what solutions should i try,
please ask for any info you need

This is a slim, 6W entry-level office cpu from 2015, benchmarks are 50% of the i3. The integrated hd graphics uses vram from the 4GB soldered-on ram.

I’m surprised you can play any games at all, apart from ultra simple 2d card games, VivoBooks were never meant for gaming.

I use a lot of old/weak hardware daily; it’s doing their job fine but you should know its limitations. Your Vivobook will be a decent multmedia player, browser or office and filing tool for the next few years but even these tasks are better done one after the other. Watching youtube with 5 browser tabs open and working in libreoffice may well bring any 4GB ram machine in 2022 to its knees.

  • forget about gaming on it
  • go to desktop settings and turn off all/most eye candy
  • use htop to hunt for high memory processes
  • remove stuff you don’t need (cups/bluez/indexers)
  • use a light conky to keep an eye on temps/cpu/ram
  • use it for one task at the time

i got the laptop for free so no big deal.
however it can also freeze when doing literally nothing except clicking a button (no matter where, how etc)

windows, despite being somewhat heavier, never froze. was testing only 2 days tho, will reinstall and check again

gaming i was talking about:

  • minecraft (averaging 90 fps on higher settings, but capped to 50)
  • cs source (40-50 fps on low)

thanks for spending some time replying

I would start with xfce minimal iso and add what’s needed. Then go to Control Centre >> Window Manager Tweaks >> Compositor and untick as much as possible and set transparencies to the right, opaque.

If you still get a freeze use Brahma’s line to investigate and show us the output. If you had to reboot the machine you want the output from the boot before, which should be
journalctl -b1 -p4 --no-pager

you have only 4gb RAM so freezes during gaming … etc are expected …

just correction for this command, the right command for the previous boot is:
journalctl -b-1 -p4 --no-pager

update:
windows 10, played minecraft for 4 hours with zero issues except for occasional throttling lasting no more than a few mins
minimal xfce, disabled compositor, same game, 10 mins and rip
i had to use the power button

anyway heres the journal:

are those logs from the prevoius boot where you needed to hard reset?

since you are dual booting:
secure boot needs to be disabled in bios
fast boot disabled in bios - you may not have this option
fast startup disabled in windows

you can check for a bios update

you can switch to a different kernel - 5.19.1, reboot, select it in grub menu/advanced options and test with it

you can change your governor from powersave to performance;
check which you have running currently with:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor
if its powersafe, change it to performance with:

sudo echo "performance" | sudo tee /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor

then verify if it was changed to performance:
cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor
if yes test playing a game

are those logs from the prevoius boot where you needed to hard reset?

i think? the system froze, ive reset it using the power button, and executed your command

since you are dual booting:

i installed windows right after i wrote that im going to do so, manjaro was the only os installed before.
plus mj doesnt support secure boot, so obviously its disabled. fast boot off too.

you can check for a bios update

last bios update for my laptop was released in 2017, so its already up to date
and your further instructions have no effect

so next time when it freezes and you have to force shut down, run this command:
journalctl -b-1 -p5 --no-pager

now post output from:
sudo dmesg -l err,warn,emerg,alert

[amougsu@amougsu-x540sa ~]$ journalctl -b-1 -p5 --no-pager

freeze - 12:17

are those the last 20 logs? because they are from 12:14 and theres really nothing in them…

are those the last 20 logs? because they are from 12:14 and theres really nothing in them…

maybe thats because the log service is also frozen?

could be… the last logs are related to ntfs which support on linux is not so good …
were you using a program that is being saved/read from ntfs?

i was copying a file from windows via file manager

and during the copying happen the freeze?

nope. and i dont think it is the cause bc system was freezing even without interacting with the partition
