→ related to the switch from KDE 5 to KDE 6 (?)

and the GPU driver is crashing

It’s not important, but I don’t know what “SO” means. :man_shrugging:

I do think it’s graphic drivers related that it does get stuck.
There are a few pending updates but this problem exists for a couple of weeks already and I already did a full system update/updated to a newer/older kernel etc.

SO = Significant Other

Is there any particular reason why your significant other is running Plasma on x11? The laptop doesn’t have an Nvidia GPU (they seem to be the main/only cause of issues with Plasma on Wayland), and Plasma Wayland works very well with AMD GPUs.

You can switch to a Plasma Wayland session by selecting it at the bottom of the SDDM login screen.

If your SO uses autologin to skip entering the password, then the session type can be changed by opening System Settings → Colors & Themes → Login Screen (SDDM) → Behavior.

Wayland had a couple of weird bugs like it flickers when hovering a folder with preview images and also occasionally got stuck on reboot (although a lot more rarely)

Maybe try switching back to Wayland with a different kernel (linux613 is EOL). As your SO’s laptop has an AMD CPU released within the past 2 years, it should have no issues running linux614, or even the linux615 release candidate. I have been running linux615 full-time on my AMD mini-PC for a month without any issues:

Plasma on X11 probably isn’t going to get any better. All the development work is being done on Plasma Wayland. As of the upcoming release of Plasma 6.4.0, kwin_x11 has been split from kwin_wayland. kwin_x11 is being maintained by volunteers, with no new features to be added - just security updates & back-ported bug fixes:

Future of KWin/X11

KWin/X11 will be still maintained for the foreseeable future. But that maintenance work will boil down to fixing build errors, adapting to new KDE Frameworks and Plasma APIs, and backporting window-related fixes from KWin/Wayland. There are no plans to drop KWin/X11 in the Plasma 6 lifecycle, although it’s highly possible that it will happen in Plasma 7.

KWin/X11 won’t receive new features anymore; until recently, it received new features that had been developed against KWin/Wayland passively (because both lived in the same repository). However, it might be actually a good thing because the X11 session doesn’t receive that much testing nowadays.
