Is someone also experiencing lag when logging in?

It used to be smooth and instant, whereas now it takes a second till I am able to key in my details.

Your profile says you’re on Plasma. So am I, but I’m not experiencing any such problems here.

• Are you using plasma-login-manager or sddm?

• Are you using an Nvidia graphics adapter with a proprietary driver?

Does the issue also occur when you start a Plasma Wayland session?

As X11 won’t be supported from the release of Plasma 6.8 on October 14th, 2026 (KDE’s 30th anniversary), you might as well test how well your system operates with Plasma Wayland.

Plasma X11 -> Wayland instructions

You can change your Plasma session from X11 to Wayland by selecting the session type at the login screen (Wayland is now KDE’s default for Plasma).

If you have set up autologin to skip the password screen, you can change to a Wayland autologin session via Plasma’s System Settings.

For users who login via sddm, open System Settings → Colors & Themes (in the Appearance & Style section) → Login Screen (SDDM) → Behavior.

If using plasma-login-manager, then open System Settings → Login Screen (in the Security & Privacy section).

Change the session type to Plasma (Wayland), save the change, and log out. You will be running a Plasma Wayland session the next time you log in.

To see if your current session is running on X11 or Wayland, run the following command in a terminal:

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

Also, detailed system information will be much more helpful than the basic system summary you provided when it comes to troubleshooting the issue.

Please provide the output of:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

If you need to run inxi from within a chroot environment, and find the output is laced with unexpected 12’s, please try again with:

If you are unable to copy and paste the inxi output due to being unable to access your desktop, but can still access a TTY text session, then you can send the inxi output to a pastebin service:

inxi -zv8c0 | nc termbin.com 9999

Note: the nc command may require installation of the openbsd-netcat package:

pamac install openbsd-netcat

or

sudo pacman -Syu openbsd-netcat

After the output is sent, a link to the inxi output will be provided, which you can then add to your forum post.

And what about disc? Full? Old? Small-ish? About to give up?

To give you some perspective on this. I use a magnetic oldie, currently almost always filled to the brim since I’m working on replacing old CD/DVD backups for more modern things. So, for me it takes quite a while to reboot and login again, maybe three to four minutes or so.

Logging out and then in again once the machine is up and running, however, does not take so much time. A handful of seconds perhaps.

Of course, I also don’t have much RAM, half of what OP has, so this might also count as a time consuming factor.

I thought this was a minor thingie, hence no inxi.

As for Wayland - had issues with screen sharing on my beloved Signal that seemed impossible to overcome at that time.

i cant be certain but ever since plasma 6.7.x i felt there is a light delay when logging-in to both wayland and x11. it does not take ages to load but there is a delay. i remember someone mentioning it as soon as 6.7 was released.
