Keyboard set to "English (US)" after each restart

Hey everybody,
I switched to Gnome lately and generally everything works fine - but: the keyboard layout changes after each restart to an English keyboard layout. I have no clue why. I always have to add the German layout and then remove the English one… How can I fix the setting so the German layout is remembered?

With some update a package got installed which should not have been - fcitx for writing languages like chinese.
See if you have it and if you don’t need it remove it.

The same has been asked and answered multiple times here and this was always the cause and solution.
