Keyboard not working anymore after login screen

Hi,

I’m having a strange issue with a Logitech Mx Keys S keyboard on Manjaro KDE (Wayland) which was working fine before.

Current behavior:

  • The keyboard works at the SDDM/login screen.
  • The keyboard is detected in Solaar.
  • The Logitech mouse still works fine through the same Logi Bolt receiver.
  • But once the KDE session starts, key presses stop working completely.
  • The keyboard can still reconnect/pair normally.

What happened:

I was using another USB keyboard for a few days. I installed last Manjaro upgrades. I noticed my touchpad stopped working.
I installed the following packages while trying to troubleshoot my touchpad:
sudo pacman -Syu libinput xf86-input-libinput

Few days later I tried to use my logitech keyboard but it didn’t work.

I already tried:

  • rebooting
  • disconnecting/reconnecting the keyboard for Solaar
  • removing xf86-input-void (adviced by ChatGPT)
  • checking lsusb (receiver detected correctly)
  • sudo evtest /dev/input/event3 correctly receives the keyboard inputs (adviced by ChatGPT)
  • systemctl --user stop ydotoold (but still ko)

I also got this warning from Fcitx5 at some point, which I disabled then uninstalled:
“Fcitx should be launched by KWin under KDE Wayland…”

Any ideas on what to check next?

Check the settings in Solaar.

It’s possible some are misconfigured for your MX keyboard – I’m personally using an “MX Keys S” keyboard, which seems to have no issues in Plasma (apart from the subtle key repositioning as compared my previous keyboard) – I do have sporadic issues with my mouse, which is generally resolved by stopping/starting Solaar.

My point is that sometimes one needs to investigate the settings rather than simply restart an application, and hope it does something – you may discover a setting change that makes all the difference.

Avoid blindly taking advice from so-called AI such as ChatGPT – all that is typically returned is information that may or may not be accurate; or even have context; depending upon the source of the original information.

[Mini-HowTo] Provide System Information

Basic details provided by *-fetch type apps might give enough information for someone wishing to buy a computer, however, for Support purposes it’s best to ask your system directly.

Output of the inxi command will generate more useful and detailed information for those who may wish to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)

Command output should be presented as pre-formatted text in accordance with forum guidelines. :eyes:

Running inxi within a chroot environment

  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

[Mini-HowTo] Present code or command output

Note: Grave accent (or, backtick) characters are used. :eyes:

For inline code or to show a single command:

  • please follow this simple example: code here.

For multi-line command output:

  • place text beween two rows of three (```) backtick characters to form a scrollable text box, or …
  • use the </> button in the Compose window to achieve the same result.

The empty row between these rows of backtick characters is where to paste any multi-line command output (such as inxi).

An example of a pre-formatted text enclosure:

What is a Quark?

A. In Physics, an elementary particle and fundamental constituent of matter.
B. A character from the Star Trek: "Deep Space Nine" television series.
C. A soft, creamy, usually unsalted cheese traditional to central Europe.

Solaar settings are all by default. I tried uninstalling it. It still doesn’t work. The keyboard still works in the BIOS or login screen though. Don’t know what else I can try.

I edited the first message and added System information.

Nasty.

Annoyingly, or perhaps despicably - the MXkeys keyboard USB-C port can only be used for charging, it won’t work wired - nice move by Logitech to limit the lifespan I suppose…

Can you locate a snapshot from before you messed it up?

No  I was using another keyboard while traveling for some time

I did:

systemctl --user stop ydotoold
systemctl --user disable ydotoold
killall ydotoold

And I tested again: KO

I tested with another user session → it worked.

ChatGPT proposes:

mv ~/.config/kcminputrc ~/.config/kcminputrc.bak
mv ~/.config/kxkbrc ~/.config/kxkbrc.bak

What do you think?

Ok, so if you’re asking ChatGPT you’re not familiar with this s41T.

What I’d suggest is that you open Dolphin with the ~/.config folder.

Then press F3 to dual pane that folder…

Hopefully you also have a proper backup.

You can copy the file kcminputrc from your backup folder, then paste it (add ‘OLD’ to the name) next to your current one, then use MELD to compare them.

You can rename your existing one (as mentioned in ChatGPT) and then rename your imported backup to replace it.

Every time you make changes in that folder, you need to restart plasma - or to be ultra sure, log out and in again to test the effect.

But sure, after testing another USER account we know for sure this is something in your USER files and it’ll be good to see if you can figure out not only which file, but also WHY it was messed up.

cat ~/.config/kcminputrc
ls -l ~/.config/kcminputrc

But remember, you don’t have to worry about the other commands…

Rather than to DELETE a file, you just rename it by moving it to a new filename.

The downside is you just lose whatever was in the file…

So after you try mv ~/.config/kcminputrc ~/.config/kcminputrc-BORKED or whatever, you can then log out/log in, find a new kcminputrc and use something like meld to compare it with the BORKED version.

Great it worked, thanks a lot.

I had this in ~/.config/kcminputrc:

[Libinput][1133][50504][Logitech USB Receiver]
Enabled=false

I just put true, logged out, logged in and it worked.
