Kernels 5.18.7-1 and 5.19rc4-1 cannot boot

As the title suggests I may not be able to access the more recent kernels as a result of my cpu cooling hardware’s RGB.

I get the information from the screenshot you can see attached to this post. This is what makes me think it could be the issue. I am going to see if the RGB is separate in my coolers case which should be easy to find and test that way as I am guessing only fixes in the kernel by a programmer can fix this otherwise

My question is there any alternative solutions or is this actually not the problem? Am I wrong with what I think could be the issue?

I did not know how to get the below screenshot in any format or recover it after a crash just in case I am supposed to -_-.

Update I tried without RGB stuff and got new crash points on both kernals with only mouse, keyboard, and monitors plugged in whilst RGB plugged out from within XD. I might just give up and await a stable release as I guess this might be up to kernal makers and manjaro people might not be able to help, but I am not sure how this all works

As a result of the above I have change the title of his.

Hi @Dormant_Hero,

As 5.15 is the latest LTS version anyway, I’d say stick with it if it works.

Yes makes sense. I just wanted to see if improvements for alder lake on later kernals improved rpcs3 performance. I love tinkering since I started this whole linux journey.

Roger that boss.

That is awesome! Mainly because, with Linux specifically, you can.

Previously, IIRC, non-LTS kernels were called “Experimental.” So that might be the reason for the regression, and will possibly not be present in the next LTS version. But I’m not sure.

I experience the same issue and I also use Intel 12th gen CPU ( i7-12700H)

5.17 works fine and i do not see any logs during boot, it instantly loads the DE.

When I switch to kernel version 5.18.7-1 or 5.19rc4-1 the logs appear instantly on boot.
After around 25 seconds, the boot process freezes for about 1 minute and then the screen turns black with a single frozen CLI cursor.

It seems that your system stops booting at different stages but also at the same time (around 7 to 8 seconds) - as my system does.

I think therefore, that this is the same bug.

ref: Manjaro completely freezes when resuming from standby and the external monitor is not turned on - #7 by kri

It’s quite unfortunate that these 2 Kernel versions wont’t work because the should include Intels Thread Director which would improve performance on intel 12th gen

It looks like something with new IBT technology proposed by Intel, which prevent drivers like nvidia driver from loading.

As thread After updating kernel to 5.18.3, system fails to start - Support^[sorry for that I could not put a link in the forum] suggests, add ibt=off works. You might need to wait for a upstream rootfix, but currently, ibt=off might be the only way.

edited to include working link:

Just seen this response this morning. You are a true hero  :prayer_beads:

I was able to boot into 5.19rc5-1 and it worked. I tested without just in case an update made it work but nope it was changing the boot options to include ibt=off.

I guess the only disadvantage is no android apps maybe? In which case I do not care.

Permanently changed it in /etc/default/ grub

This solved it for me too. I’m on an optimus notebook and I was skipping updates because of this.

Also btrfs is great for this sort of stuff. Your system is borked after an update? Just rollback and wait for a solution =)

I had no idea about that. I activated grub to roll back kernals as it offers you your previous kernal selection on boot.
