Is there a reason you want to use 7.2.0rc5-1?

For 7.2 release candidate kernels it may be better to switch to unstable branch
that has 7.2.0rc5-2 at the moment, but should have 7.2-rc5-4 soon

I should also point out that that kernel 7.2.0rc5-1 is a release candidate – that’s what the “rc” stands for – as such, it is expected that there might be issues with it.

Generally, only users with an interest in experimenting with a new kernel and/or participating in either the Unstable or Testing branches will install a pre-release kernel.

If your issue is a result of using a release candidate kernel, it might be prudent to install the well supported kernel 6.18 (LTS) instead.

This would involve booting from a live USB, entering a chroot environment, and installing the kernel as described in the following Wiki article:

It might be useful to see where does it exactly hang. When rebooting hit the esc key to show the grub menu and edit the boot entry removing quiet splash

Further Clarification

It hangs on the shutdown process not the grub process. It never gets to the restart of the CPU. I tried unstable branch and rc-2 has the same issue. The reason I brought the topic up was to report issues on testing branch. I run stable kernels most of the time. My Dell laptop (intel I7) performs properly with the newer Kernels.

I encountered a regression bug during shutdown on: Framework Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen 5 7640U with Radeon 760M graphics card)

The Fix will land into 7.3 but may not be backported to 7.2:

as a POI 7.2.0RC6-1 has same issue. Back on 7.1 - Will test or rebuild & test on next update

I can’t replicate it (on a desktop), 7.2.0rc6-1 reboots quickly for me, so it might be something with your hardware or your setup.

If this thread is to be anything but a waste of time, you need to provide information about the issue.

Do you see messages on shutdown?
If no, then do this :down_arrow: and answer the other questions

What’s the last message you see during shutdown?
Are there any other messages that might indicate the issue, eg a stop job with infinite timeout?
Is there anything in the journal that might shed light on the issue?

Keep in mind, if it’s actually an issue with the kernel - we’re not kernel devs. Also as it’s an RC, the issue may be resolved by the time it’s released.

7.2-rc6 is also a bad one for my fw laptop

I rebuilt my system and tried again. Also ran diagnostics etc. Wayland hang is present. Changed config by dropping external drives. No changes – will wait until later update. I hope this gets bumped up to Kernel developers.
