Hello everyone,
since upgrading to kernel 6.5.x (any version including 6.5.5) my desktop PC boots very slowly and does not shut down.
When booting, after the BIOS I get a black screen for a very long time (about 30 minutes) before the Manjaro login screen shows up. Everything seems to work correctly afterwards, until I try to shutdown or reboot.
When shutting down, the following error is shown:
Timed out for waiting the udev queue being empty.
I’ve tried leaving the PC on but to no avail, I’ve always had to force shutdown by pressing the power button. It’s possible that waiting for a longer period of time would result in the PC shutting down by itself; I don’t know.
Reverting to kernel 6.4 solves the problem. I’ve tried reinstalling kernel 6.5 after every kernel update but nothing changed.
I’ve tried searching this forum and online for the error message but I couldn’t find anything related. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to solve this issue?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Hi
Perhaps you can show the community some info about you’re system. There’s plenty information how you should do that on the forum.
Then there’s this thread, hope it might solve you’re problem.
Hello,
since the last update my system does not boot anymore.
Only the following error message appears:
Timed out waiting for device disk/by-uuid/*hash_of_disk*
Dependency failed for /mnt/*same_hash_as_above*
I’m able to open a new session, but I have no clue what I can type in to fix my problem, because I’m new to Linux. I’ve tried to find a solution via search function tho.
Greetings
pezlu

This being a production machine in currently running kennel 6.4, which works, but if needed I can reinstall kennel 6.5 for testing.
I’ve checked the thread you suggested, I had noticed it while searching the forum but the issue seems quite different. In my case the system boots, albeit very slowly.
Any suggestions?
Thanks again for the help

Any suggestions?
I had a similar experience which was attributable to the same GTX 660 model some years ago (in a Debian derivitive). I’m afraid I don’t recall how I overcame that, but it may help to narrow the search.

You could try to restore the boot loader .
You have a /boot partition but no /boot/efi partition. How did you mount your ESP ?
What is your use case for requiring the latest kernel on a system where both cpu + gpu (and motherboard BIOS) are more than 10 years old? You’d probably be better off with 6.1 LTS.

After some thinking I decided to just go that way. I reverted to 6.1; maybe I’ll upgrade to the next LTS ignoring other kernels.
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions
