Kernel 5.9:10-1 : video not usable with i915

Hi @Stephix

Is tearfree active?

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel#Tearing

Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:

I tried different lines for xorg:

Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    	Driver "intel"

    	Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
    	Option "TearFree" "true"

and

Option "DRI" "2"

because Xorg.0.log says

(EE) /dev/dri/card0: failed to set DRM interface version 1.4: Permission denied

No change :pensive:

I will try to save the output of dmesg despite of the streaks

Are you sure, you have no hybrid card?

But it’s fine with linux58 kernel.

In both cases direct rendering is enable and seems to run.

name of display: :0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4

The streaks occurs early at the boot. Before lightdm. Consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F2 etc.) are affected too.

I am experiencing the same on my Intel NUC (7PJYH). Screen tearing, almost like a “seizure”.
System runs fine on 5.8.18-1, but upgrading to 5.9.10-1 ensures screen tearing. Also upgrading to the experimental kernel 5.10.xx causes these screen tearing issues to appear.

Will update with an [EDIT] as I don’t have the 20-intel.conf on my system.

[EDIT]: Adding the 20-intel.conf file with enabled TearFree didn’t resolve the issue on 5.9.10-1 unfortunately. Going back to 5.8.18-1 for now.

Hi rswaagman

Do you use lightdm ?

If I don’t init lightdm while booting and then run “startx”, the screen is correct with kernel 5.9.

Ok i tried myself on my older laptop:

Here it works like it should.

Yes, it was fresh Manjaro XFCE (Minimal) installation. I will try what you suggest as soon as I will figure out how to not init lightdm and running startx :stuck_out_tongue:

This seems not to be relative to lightdm because the problem occurs with lxdm.

I’m not able to find out what’s wrong between booting or not the dm… :sob:

Well, I guess we either wait for someone to help and just remain on 5.8 for the time being, or hope that the issue gets resolved on a future update of 5.9 or on the new LTS kernel 5.10.

Let’s hope this issue gets resolved in time

I have a similar problem, reported elsewhere (can’t post links in my posts it seems for some reason).
There I have been pointed to this thread.

For me (lightdm with i3), when booting into X the screen is glitchy, like colors messed up and such - unusable. But if I logout and back in, everything is fine.

So also Lenovo i915, so that is probably related.

I’ll be a monkey’s uncle if the problem isn’t related to the refresh rate. I bet if you delete ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml and reboot (the file will get regenerated when you reboot) kernel 5.10 will work fine.

Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m using i3wm…

Problem not solved with kernel 5.10.2-2 :pensive:

Nuts :frowning:

I don’t know anything about i3wm. Does it let you change the refresh rate? If so, try changing the refresh rate from the default (60hz or whatever the default is) to something else and see if that has any effect, that would at least confirm if the problem is related to the refresh rate.

I tried to change refresh rate with xrandr but can’t obtain any change.
I compared with a correct display (other kernel) and the rate is the same (60).

It seems to me that the incorrect display goes beyond the width screen size…
Perhaps vsync/hsync is not set as it should be
I have to investigate. At this time I don’t know how to…
