KDE / Wayland - External display crashes and enters a loop on multiple machines

Similarly to this post from 2023, I have been having the same issue on both my personal and work laptop, both with Manjaro KDE in wayland and only on my samsung LS27CG55 144Hz 1440p display.

I can connect the display and it will work fine for ~5s and then crash and bootloop until I remove the HDMI cable. The only workaround I have found is to turn on the display, open the settings menu on the display and leave it on while connecting the HDMI cable, then waiting for 5s to pass and close the settings panel, then everything is stable.

My personal laptop has had this install of Manjaro since 2021 but is running on the newest stable release, so I tought the issue might go away when reinstalling everything.

This week I got a work laptop and I installed the latest Manjaro KDE release and the same issue appeared.

Both laptops have AMD CPU with iGPUs (5700U and 7840U) and both are connected with a beefy HDMI cable to my monitor.

This does not happen on older Ubuntu 20.04 or on the Windows partition I had for a while and only started happening by about november last year.

Please always post the full inxi output rather than only the portions you think might be needed.

I’m sure someone will help when they can.
In the meantime, a little housekeeping:

Welcome to the Manjaro community

Ok! I updated the original reply with the full inxi

Please make clear: Is your display crashing or do you have a bootloop? Exact error description is crutial for solving the issue…

The monitor itself crashes.

I connect the monitor and it works for 5ish seconds.

The monitor turns off abruptly.
KDE goes back to my single monitor setup.
Display turns on by itself.
Kde goes to my dual monitor setup for a second and immediately goes back.
Monitor goes off straightaway.

Same behaviour on both laptops.

This sounds to me like a hardware issue.

Working on Ubuntu 20.04 would suggest the kernel or Plasma has a regression somewhere.

As Manjaro as distribution uses upstream packages there is nothing the team can do to fix your issue.

Being on stable branch implies that upstream updates that may fix the regression is not available yet.

You can work around this by switching to testing branch which has been updated today.

I just tested with a Lenovo X13 AMD (7840U APU (unstable) using hdmi to connect Acer XV272 using 3840x1200.

The connection prompted the expected dialog and there is no bootloop or monitor crash.

As @Wollie, I suspect it could be hardware related, but I cannot be conclusive.

Tested on

Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.2.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.10.0
Qt Version: 6.8.1
Kernel Version: 6.13.0-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U w/ Radeon 780M Graphics
Memory: 30,0 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon 780M
Manufacturer: LENOVO
Product Name: 21J3CTO1WW
System Version: ThinkPad X13 Gen 4

I do get some irritating screen distortion (cursor area horizontally) where I am editing this post.

These occur on my primary laptop screen (1920x1200) but disappears when moving browser to external display.

//EDIT:
I am able to remove the flicker by setting external screen to same resolution as internal screen and setting adaptive sync to always.

Then reboot user space

systemctl reboot-userspace

This could indicate the kwin window manager has problems drawing the screens correct when different resolutions is used - especially if the format is different as in 16:9 vs 16:10.

You should report your issue upstream KDE at [bugs.kde.org]

To reach a working solution, I suggest you experiment with the resolutions and adaptive sync until you find the correct combination for your system.
