Kde spectacle issue with breeze application style

Hi Manjaro, spectacle does not work nicely when I’ve the “default” application style breeze. It works ok with another application style, like oxygen or even kvantum. This is what I experience:

  1. run spectacle
  2. select a region
  3. if in the newly opened window containig the screenshot, you click on “new screenshot” no pulldown menu appear. If I change the application style (in kde/system setting) the pulldown menu appears

If I look into journalctl -b at the bottom I see a lot of messages like:

Aug 03 18:42:57 manjaro-imac kwin_wayland_wrapper[871]: radeon: The kernel rejected CS, see dmesg for more information (-22).
Aug 03 18:42:57 manjaro-imac kernel: radeon 0000:01:00.0: evergreen_surface_check_linear_aligned:216 texture pitch 312 invalid must be aligned with 64
Aug 03 18:42:57 manjaro-imac kernel: radeon 0000:01:00.0: evergreen_cs_track_validate_texture:831 texture invalid 0x04dc0981 0x1000007f 0x060a0000 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x80>

ifI look into dmesg I get the same 2nd and 3rd lines above

Unfortunately I can’t duplicate it, as I’m not using an imac.

I am thinking it may be related to the GPU and the driver in use.

Kvantum is a theming engine - and depending on the theme, it may interfere with the spectacle window.

Your kernel is 6.18 and I don’t know if the improvements in newer kernels with relation to old AMD GPU has been backported to 6.18.

It may be worth testing if the newer Linux 7.1 or 7.2 can mitigate your issue

Hi aarhus thanks for having a look at it.

Possibly I was not clear. Only to note that with kvantum (and any other application style) spectacle works as expected. Only with breeze does not, and I’m surprised because it is the “main” style.

It seems something related to the main window/menus. Why I say this: if I right click on the spectacle icon in the main panel/bar, I see a pop up menu with “new screenshot” and it works as expected. Instead if i click on “new screenshot” menu item in the application window, that it crashes/disappear …

If of any help: I also see a lot of below messages, same for various kde applications. Example below is for konsole, but I have the same for dolphin, kwrite and so on:

Aug 04 12:34:16 manjaro-imac konsole[7283]: Icon theme "elementary" not found.

What icon theme are you using? If it is one you installed into ~/.local/share/icons/, then it may have some redundant Inherits= listed in the index.theme file.

For example, I use the BeautyLine - KDE Store theme, and I used to get the “Icon theme not found” messages due to its default index.themefile containing the following Inherits:

[Icon Theme]
Name=BeautyLine
Inherits=breeze,Adwaita,ubuntu-mono,yaru,Mint-X,elementary,hicolor

So, I edited the file to inherit only icon themes installed on my system:

[Icon Theme]
Name=BeautyLine
Inherits=breeze,Adwaita,hicolor

No more missing icon theme error messages.

Alternatively, instead of editing the index.theme file, you could just install the missing icon themes…

I have no issues with spectacle like you have.

I do know that Plasma is sensitive to components which is not up-to-date for the current Plasma version.

The only suggestion I have at this point is to verify that all the components is using the breeze style.

One easy way of ensuring that is the case it so navigate to

  • Colors & Themes
  • Global Theme
  • Select the Breeze variant
  • Tick both boxes and click Apply

@scotty65

Thx Scotty! That solves the “icon messages” part. spectacle issue still there, but at least I’ve less clutter in my journal :slight_smile: Thanks for the hint!

@linux-aarhus

Hi aarhus thx, I tried you suggestion, but no change…

Mod edit: Consecutive posts merged again, @mentions added.

Strange - even more so when I cannot reproduce it…

We know that Plasma is a sensitive beast in many aspects.

We know that configuration files may be misinterpreted and thereby causing various inconsistencies.

We know that Plasma caches various information in ~/.cache

With an issue this stubborn - you may need to use extraordinary methods.

Examples of such methods

  • logout of Plasma - switch to TTY - login as your use and wipe ~/.cache
  • remove ~/.config/spectaclerc file
  • remove app data ~/.local/share/spectacle

Thx aarhus. no success, but I appreciate the help. I’m coming to terms to use it as-is. I prefer to use the breeze style with all my daily used apps, after all I only use spectacle rarely. You may close the topic if you want, I do not want to pull resources/attention from other may be more critical topics. cheers

For your information, there is another method of capturing different screenshot styles. There are separate keyboard shortcuts for invoking the different modes of spectacle:backhand_index_pointing_down:

  • PrtSc launches spectacle with its default mode (which is configurable)
  • ShiftPrtSc takes a full-screen screenshot
  • MetaShiftPrtSc captures a rectangular region
  • MetaCtrlPrtSc captures the active window
