KDE Plasma Task switcher not showing window previews

Hi Y’all!

This is just a minor annoyance, not actually a problem.

Since switching to Wayland, everything worked just fine on x11, since switching my Task Switcher (Alt + Tab) becomes broken. In the sense that just after login it’s working perfectly, but as the session goes on the Task Switcher loses its window previews. This happens:

And it happens with all the switchers, that supports the window previews, not just “Cover Switch”:

This is obviously not a deal-breaker, but it is something I’d like to get sorted out. Does anybody have any ideas how to fix it, or what causes it, or something in that regard.

I’m afraid I cannot reproduce it. It works fine here. :man_shrugging:

Lucky you! So then I guess it’s something local to me. But what it could be, I have no idea.

Have you tried logging out and back in?

Not specifically for this, but even rebooting. It’s always the same, just tested again:

upon re-login, everything works hunky-dory:

But then, either after some time has passed, or after I’ve done something unknown to me, the above happens.

That sounds like a process that has crashed. But it’s not kwin, because you still have task switching.

Yeah. It’s confusing as heck!

I can’t reproduce it either. No that I use ALT + Tab as a rule, but I’ve not notice any degradation of Previews.

I’m not saying it’s related, but your profile shows that you’re using an Nvidia GPU with the proprietary driver.

Yup. I think I want to get an Intel Arc or AMD, but this is what my wife bought when I still used Windows and getting Nvidia was a no-brainer.

I’ve come to my senses since, thank goodness.

Yeah, I realize this is local, but I don’t know where to look or which files top inspect/delete. I’m still looking.

I’m starting to suspect it only happens when I save/saved a setting, because I’ve gone through not one, but two suspend-resume cycles and it still works.

Edit:

Just tested by changing settings, even window behavior settings, and nope. 'is still hanging in there.

Edit #2:

Just tested all the Switchers installed, and all working perfectly!

Conclusion: gremlins in deh circuitry.

Edit #3:

The final one.

Welp, it’s been roughly a day or more since I last played with the Task Switcher, and I’ve had 0 (zero) problems since. Confirming that it was something local, leading me to one of two explanations:

  1. When I changes the Switcher to a different one and back it “reset” the configuration. I don’t know if this is something that could’ve been influenced by the upgrade from Plasma 5 to 6, but it seems likely.
  2. Gremlins with mischievous magic.

So far I’m putting my money on #2.
