KDE-No Audio-Made Mistake When Switching From Pipewire To Pulse

Hi,

I tried to switch from Pipewire to Pulse using the following terminal commands:

pamac remove manjaro-pipewire
pamac install manjaro-pulse
pamac install pulseaudio pulseaudio-alsa

BUT used “sudo” with all three above commands.
Currently have no audio on KDE Manjaro…

Can someone explain how to get audio back?
I still would like to use Pulse.

Thank you!

Do not use sudo with pamac.

Just to be super double sure … what happens with

sudo pacman -Syu manjaro-pulse

It is still unclear what the actual issue is.

This might indicate some leftovers of pipewire are around somehow.
We can check with

pacman -Qs pipewire

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply!

sudo pacman -Syu manjaro-pulse                                                         ✔  17s 

I have no audio coming out of speakers or headphones?

pacman -Qs pipewire                                                                    ✔  13s 

I forgot to ask why the desire for pulseaudio?

Anyways … all those extra pipewire things should be removed (besides kpipewire and libpipewire as they are needed by spectacle)…

sudo pacman -Rns gst-plugin-pipewire lib32-pipewire libwireplumber pipewire pipewire-alsa pipewire-audio pipewire-session-manager wireplumber

I wanted to to try pulseaudio because of sound not working in NoMachine guest computer…

sudo pacman -Rns gst-plugin-pipewire lib32-pipewire libwireplumber pipewire pipewire-alsa pipewire-audio pipewire-session-manager wireplumber
[sudo] password for jlp:

:: removing lib32-pipewire breaks dependency 'lib32-pipewire' required by steam-native-runtime
:: removing pipewire breaks dependency 'pipewire' required by xdg-desktop-portal

Oh … it looks like a handful of things still rely on some pipewire packages.
We can still remove a few though;

sudo pacman -Rns gst-plugin-pipewire pipewire-alsa pipewire-audio

Ok, after reboot, I have audio again on Manjaro KDE…
…Still no sound from NoMachine Windows 11 guest though?

I guess I will live with it, thank you!

Was this a careless mistake - it’s easy to confuse pamac/pacman, so I added an alert for this - juz a little wrapper.

  • ❯ which pamac
    /usr/local/bin/pamac
#!/bin/bash

if [[ $(ps -o comm= $PPID) == "sudo" ]]; then
    echo "Warning: Do not use 'pamac' with 'root' privileges. It can cause permission issues."
    read -p "Are you sure you want to continue? (y/n): " choice
    if [[ $choice != "y" ]]; then
        echo "Exiting..."
        exit 1
    else
        echo "Continuing..."
    fi
fi

/usr/bin/pamac "$@"

Only if you really know your onions…

OP was not suggested to use sudo
