Kde nightlight forces (me) to use color accuracy instead of color efficiency

Hi Manjaro,
if I want to have a usable night light, meaning:
a) working progessively with temperature slider
b) working as expected regardless of display luminosity

I’m forced to use “prefer color accuracy” in display setting. If I use “prefer efficency” what I get is a sort “step” behaviour as in:

  1. change in kelvin temperature has no effect, until I reach super “warm” setting, say 2000K. Until say 2100k no change appears, then suddenly the color turns super “warm” (unusable)
  2. If I increase display luminosity say to 70% the above behaviour happens in higher (colder color) kelvin, like 2600k

Thx

Hi bananamangodog, I’d say not hw. If I use “color accuracy” setting all works as expected … My catch from a quick search is “color efficiency” locks to 10bit depth. I’d point to the device driver, as my imac is 15 years old. May be the last implementations iterations introduced some regressions. But just guessing, I’ve no real idea …

Correct - if your display supports higher bit depth changing the option to “prefer accuracy” will allow higher bit depth (and usually selects it automatically).

Which is the interface between linux and your hardware - so it is a hardware limitation in that there is no suitable controller to use it.

Right next to that setting, if you hover over the (:information_source:) icon, it says:

DDC/CI is a feature supported by many
monitors. Plasma can use it to adjust
screen brightness with desktop controls,
as if using the monitor's own hardware
buttons and OSD menu.

So both your monitor and the graphics/display hardware need to support DDC/CI.

A quick search suggests that the built-in display on this iMac does not support DDC/CI.

The built-in LCD panel does not expose DDC/CI. You cannot control its brightness using ddcutil or other DDC/CI tools because it’s connected internally over Apple’s embedded display interface, not via a standard DisplayPort/DDC channel.

Change your lock/desktop to a solid background and warm it to what you like.

Hi there, curious my (I)nfo icon does not show that message … I opened this topic because:

  1. that same (I)nfo states “Note that this setting may have a large impact on performance” and
  2. a “few” updates ago all was working as expected. I’ve another distro on the same machine based on X11 KDE 6.3 and there with “color efficiency” all is fine. It is either wayland or recent KDE

Anyway with color accuracy all works as expected (so far) and I’m not experiencing “impacts on performance”
