KDE dual monitor issue: kde freezes when reconnecting external display

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing an issue with KDE and dual monitor setup.

My laptop has a built-in display with a resolution of 2560x1600. I used to regularly connect an external high refresh rate monitor with 1920x1080 resolution (165Hz). Recently, I haven’t used the external display for a while, but today I reconnected it.

The external screen lights up, but KDE partially freezes:

  • The mouse can move.
  • I can open a terminal with a shortcut.
  • I can also launch other GUI applications, and they work fine.
  • However, KDE itself seems frozen — the clock in the panel doesn’t update, and I can’t click on anything on the desktop.

To temporarily fix this, I run the following command:

$ xrandr --output DP-1-0 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --rate 165 --output eDP-1 --primary --mode 2560x1600 --pos 1920x0

After this, everything works normally again. But the issue reappears every time I unplug and reconnect the external monitor.

How can I permanently solve this problem?
Thanks in advance!

Here is my screenfetch:

Interestingly, when I log in using Wayland instead of X11, everything works fine.

Well there’s your solution. :wink:

X11 is no longer maintained, and Wayland is the preferred way to go. But if you have a need to continue using X11, because some application you rely has not yet moved to Wayland.

Please supply output from the following

inxi -zv8

I’m happy to use Wayland!
However, when I launch VirtualBox and start a virtual machine, everything works fine until I switch to full-screen mode.
After that, the mouse can no longer switch properly between the host and the guest — it doesn’t work inside the VM, and even becomes unresponsive in the host’s browser.
Is there any solution to this? Thanks!

Also, here is the output of inxi -zv8 under X11:

Perhaps then, inxi -zv8 while using Wayland, so someone can help you sort out the issue with VirtualBox.

I think I’ve found the solution — disabling the mini toolbar in full-screen mode in virtualbox.
Here is the link: Mouse capture on Fullscreen breaks (Arch)

If that does solve your problem, mark your post as the Solution, so that others can find it.

@ling

Switching to Wayland is probably best, going forward; I’ve used it myself for the better part of two years without issue (using AMD graphics).

A quick reminder about system information;

(Incidentally, neofetch is no longer being maintained; you might consider using fastfetch instead):

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum guidelines) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Regards.
