You can use xfce4 with i3. This disables both xfwm4 and xfdesktop in the process:
Edit - Tried the first method in a vm and it works great. Make sure you disable the i3status bar so it doesn’t conflict with xfce4-panel:

If you are looking for a tiling wm then i3 is great.
if you want tiling wm openbox is an excellent choice
