IO lag after fixing up shutdown mid update

My computer got shutdown (due to power outage) towards the tail end of a system upgrade and could not boot due to this error
reinstalling everthing from a live environment fixed it.

But the system has been laggy eversince.

Checking htop shows plashmashell, kglobalacceld and dolphin all hogging up 1.5GB+ memory with CPU spikes every 3-4 seconds. The total memory usage is constantly hovering around 94% of 12GB total memory with just one librewolf instance with 6 tabs open.

Switching application via clicking on taskbas has a solid 10-15 second delay, alt-tab also has a 4-5 second delay.

journalctl -b0 --since today shows:

Aug 22 16:32:27 dp03-optiplex790 kglobalacceld[1379]: kf.service.sycoca: Could not open "/etc/xdg/menus/applications-merged/com.blackmagicdesign.resolve.menu"

the entire log is filled with the same error repeated over and over again. This probably is due to a past Davinci Resolve installation but it has not been installed for many months now and I dont know how it could possibly cause an issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

I suggest removing the user’s local .cache folder.

Log out - switch TTY - login as user and remove

rm -r .cache

flushing the cache seemed to work for a bit but htop shows memory usage for kglobalacceld and dolphin keeps climbing slowing with the same occasional CPU spike all while staying idle, and input lag on clicking via mouse is still there.

as in the above attached image, with the exception of chromium kglobacceld and dolphin are hovering around 30-60% CPU utilization constantly.

The systemd logs are also only filled with these processes only, over and over again:

There is something left on your system by Resolve that is causing those applications to look for that menu file. You need to find it and remove it.

find ~ -name '*blackmagicdesign*'

If that doesn’t help then try grep (will take a while)

grep -rlF 'blackmagicdesign' ~

All that was found were empty directories.

Deleting /etc/xdg/menus/applications-merged/com.blackmagicdesign.resolve.menu fixed the previous issue but now the logs have a new error, same CPU and Memory spikes and input lag:

After uninstalling plasma-simplemenu there no more logs in journalctl but the issue persists, I guess the issue was never with any of the applications in the logs, just after reinstalling kde packages, the performance has deteriorated.

I wonder if these logs have filled up your / …? df -h / — this, along with excessive menory/swap usage can cause these types of slowdowns.

For memory usage: free -h (I sometimes prepend that with watch -n 10 for example).

Another one: htop.

Some other standard approaches that I have not seen mentioned yet:

  1. Rebuild KDE Plasma cache
    1. rm ~/.config/Trolltech.conf
    2. kbuildsycoca6 --noincremental
  2. When logging in, try switching from X11 to Wayland (or vice versa) and see if the problem persists
  3. Try creating a new user and see if the problem persists

Thanks for your suggestions, but unfortunately none of them seem to have worked, Rebuilding the cache and creating a new user had no effect, switching to wayland shows a blank screen with glitches.

Currently the only “fix” is to manually kill kglobalacceld, dolphin and kplasmashell periodically whenever their memory usage reaches 1GB.

Just to reiterate, there seem to be no suspicious logs in systemd journal, but the memory usage by all three process keeps climbing (along with CPU usage spikes) if left unchecked and when it reaches 90% the system lag becomes unmanageable.

Also when reinstalling everything from the live environment ldconfig showed many libraries as *.so empty, not checked, it doesnt error anymore but i figured it could be related.
