Investigating sleep/resume issues on HP Elitebook 840 G8

I hope this is the right section for this posting – if not please advise me which one fits better or just move it there.

I really :partying_face: (enjoy) and :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: (love) my HP Elitebook 840 G8 with Manjaro Xfce and as a daily driver I often use sleep and resume in different working areas with changing devices attached.

Most of the time (9/10 times) this works like a charm – so in this thread I’d like to investigate this one special case which frustrates me massively if it happens.

The single issue I’m talking about is that I want to resume my notebook from sleep (more details following) and after opening the lid the power LED in the upper right corner KEEPS ON FLASHING, the FAN STARTS to run (you can hear him if it is silent enough so it’s not full speed) and the notebook is not reacting anymore. No matter if I attach / detach devices, hit the power button (many times), hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE, use the REISUB (MagicSys-Key procedure), attach the USB-C hub with networking and try a wake-on-lan. Nothing.

It’s finally DEAD.

The only way to revive him is to press and hold the power button for at least four seconds until the PC turns completely off – “loosing” the work I haven’t properly saved before putting him to sleep…

This is massively frustrating me and I’d like to find the main cause together with you fellow Manjaro people (TL;DR: I assume it’s the DELL USB-C Mobile Adapter DA300u but that’s not assured yet)

Let’s dig into it!

Sleep procedure details and assumptions

My regular sleep procedure is as follows:

  • Trigger the sleep using Xfce’s built in panel function (I think it’s using systemctl suspend)
  • Wait until the power LED in the upper right corner is flashing slowly (which means it has reached sleep state)
  • Close the lid
  • Detach all devices

Because I’m changing working places on a regular basis I cannot assure that I reattach all devices in the same order / way like they were before. As I said before this is no problem in almost all cases and I also use the HP docking station with several devices connected at one of the working places without a problem.

So I assume the DELL USB-C Mobile Adapter DA300u is the main cause, because it is one of my mostly attached devices when this happens (unfortunately I did not pay attention on this explicitly by now). But I still need to proof it. This is where you might come into place.

It is difficult to investigate this in a structured way because I can’t even reproduce the issue. Trying different scenarios today I could only reproduce it exactly once at the very beginning of my testing. So I’d like to provide you some logs here and maybe you have a hint for me what I could try next time to proof if it’s the DELL Hub or any other device.

In the meantime I will pay attention to NOT ATTACH the DELL Hub to my notebook anymore before resuming it – I will report back if that resolved the issue.

Details around the “sleep freeze”

When this issue happened the following devices were attached to the computer

while putting it to sleep:

  • DELL USB-C Mobile Adapter (referred to as DELL Hub)
  • Yubico YubiKey OTP+FIDO+CCID

while resuming it from sleep:

  • DELL USB-C Mobile Adapter
  • Yubico YubiKey OTP+FIDO+CCID
  • Power supply
  • HDMI cable with screen attached
  • USB 3.0 Hub (referred to as USB-HUB)

Unfortunately I couldn’t reproduce it using this procedure again so I assume it maybe has to do with the TIMING or it is some kind of sporadic issue. I hope the “log snapshots” of my test scenarios are helpful instead.

Summary

One thing I stumbled upon was the changing “USB Hub product” in the logs. One time it was Product: USB2.0 Hub then it was Product: USB3.0 Hub or Product: USB3.1 Hub. Maybe this could be a hint.

As I already said I will try to NOT ATTACH the DELL Hub before resuming during the next weeks and let’s see if the issue is solved. I will report back. And if you have a tip or an idea what I could test I’m looking forward to read from you here.
