Intel iris xe screen flickering on i3 - found solutions don't help

Disclaimer:
For some reason I cannot replicate the proplematic behaviour atm. I don’t know why, but I’m happy for now.
@mods: if you close this thread, can I re-open it, if the issue comes back?

Hi everybody,

NV41 Series 14" coreboot laptop

  • SKU: nv41pz-i5
  • CPU: i5-1240p
  • M.2 SSD: Samsung 980 Pro

after logging in there is a 1 in 7 chance the screen starts to flicker. Meaning that black rectangles cover the whole width of the screen but not the whole height (starting from the bottom) repeatedly for fractions of a second. When moving the cursor they seem to intensify.
→ there has never been flickering on the log-in screen, only after logging in!
→ sometimes it doesn’t flicker

  • I tried multiple Kernels (5.10, 5.15, 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3).
  • I turned off any sleep options via gui
  • I added the recommended i915.enabled parameters in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=“” and the sudo update-grub afterwards: i915.enable_psr=0 i915.enable_dc=0 i915.enable_dc=0 i915.force_probe=pci_myId
  • I reinstalled the whole system
  • I disabled Intel Management Engine and Secure Boot (but also tried when it was enabled)

///// Please do not answer yet, I’m still gathering information \\\

sudo update-grub shows these lines at the end:

Warning: os-prober will be executed to detect other bootable partitions.
Its output will be used to detect bootable binaries on them and create new boot entries.
Adding boot menu entry for UEFI Firmware Settings ...

done

I don’t understand what this means. this is the only hard drive in the system, how is it unknown?

///// Please do not answer yet, I’m still gathering information - unless you have a solution of course ; ) \\\

Hi - I have the same problem, and for me downgrading intel-ucode to the previous version 20230214-1 fixed the GPU problems for me.

To downgrade, either:

  1. Install from your local cache (if your system had the old version installed & still has it in cache):
# pacman -U file:///var/cache/pacman/pkg/intel-ucode-20230214-01.pkg.tar.zst
  1. Downgrade it by letting pacman download from the Arch Linux Archives:
See Arch Wiki: Arch_Linux_Archive#How_to_downgrade_one_package (I can’t post links)
# pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/(stable/whatever you are on)/intel-ucode-20230214-1.pkg.tar.zst
  1. Downgrade via the “downgrade” utility:
    github: archlinux-downgrade/downgrade

(Old:)
Sorry, I don’t have a definitive solution yet, but the same problem.

But I did have a live system before the update occurred, so dumped all system information that I know how to dump pre-update, ran the update, and dumped everything again, then dug around in the diffs.

Biggest difference that I can currently see from the inxi output:

 CPU:
Info: model: 12th Gen Intel Core i7-1260P bits: 64 type: MST AMCP
arch: Alder Lake level: v3 note: check built: 2021+
     process: Intel 7 (10nm ESF) family: 6 model-id: 0x9A (154) stepping: 3
- microcode: 0x429
+ microcode: 0x42C

The newer microcode (0x429 → 0x42C) was released 8/8/2023, pacman.log says the same:

[2023-08-14T12:26:39+0200] [ALPM] upgraded intel-ucode (20230214-1 -> 20230808-1)

This is the same microcode you are running (per your inxi output).

I’m currently testing if downgrading the microcode fixes the issues.

Things that didn’t work: (for most, see wiki.archlinux.org/title/intel_graphics)

  • kernel parameter i915.enable_guc=2 / i915.enable_guc=3
