Intel graphics 915 lists my external display as unknown monitor after latest update

I have an old lenovo laptop with VGA output, I have a samsung 1080p monitor connected as secondary display on the VGA (monitor does not have other inputs).

I updated manjaro and rebooted. My external monitor stopped working. Initially I tried older pre-installed kernel versions thinking it could be related to the kernel version.

Installed kernel 6.6 and still no joy. Tried other forum posts but most people struggle with nvidia, this laptop only has the intel display.
My monitor has been working issue-free for months.
Now it is listed as “unknown monitor” and it does not display anything, only resultion available 1024x768, which does not work.
I tried to manually add some display modes with xrandr, but it does not display and goes into sleep mode.

seems that the external monitor has no EDID information, so that the driver has to guess by trail and error what resolution could work. Share the output of:

pamac install base-devel
pamac build edid-decode-git
find -L /sys/class/drm/ -maxdepth 2 -type f -iname "*edid" -exec sh -c 'echo "{}"' \; -exec edid-decode "{}" 2>/dev/null \;

I have no idea why, but it just seems to be the case that the EDID cannot be read from the monitor for reasons :man_shrugging:

Seems like only the laptop display is reporting edid information, something perhaps removed with the latest version?

Previously it did not complain about the signal cable, but it did not work either.
Unplugging the laptop side it complained about no signal present.

I just unplugged the vga cable at both the monitor and the laptop and plugged it in again.

It must have been a poor contact as it is alive again. Reporting EDID and display working.
Hopefully this helps someone, I wasted 3 hours on a cable with poor contact :face_with_thermometer: :sleepy: :roll_eyes:
