Integrated Intel i915/Radeon RX 460/560D / Pro Not Using GPU

I’m a long time Microsoft computer user. Starting with MSDOS 1.0. My computer will not upgrade to Win11. TPM chip is too old. Yet I find it has plenty of power for what I need, e.g. internet, spreadsheets, database and occasional gaming.

Updates for Win10 will be ending in little over a year. Thought I would try Linux rather than replacing a good computer. Have tried several distros, e.g. Ubuntu, Pop, Puppy, Fedora. This is the first one that came up reasonably gracefully. Everything else needed nomodeset on to not black screen on startup. But they used graphic emulation not the system video cards.

Have Intel and Radeon video cards. These is an integrated graphics system. The Inte i915 handling everything except GPU work. See wikipedia article on AMD_Hybrid_Graphics

I do not think the AMD card is active. See below lshw -c video output

Tried various versions of the command line in the Live version starting with the g, grub parameters from the live USB.
 "quiet splash udev.log_priority=3 driver=nonfree nouveau.modeset=0 i915.modeset=1 radeon.modeset=1"

All ended up with black screen. Removed the quiet and found they got to Triggering uevents and blacked out.

What else can I do to get the Radeon card live or is this expected?

TIA & thanks for reading.

This will prevent you from loading any drivers.
Please remove it.

(likely) Steps

There are multiple ways to apply a boot option like that.
But I might guess it is in /etc/default/grub
Open the file, delete the option, save and close.
Then run

sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Editing the path if yours is somewhere nonstandard.

Reboot.
Check and share inxi again.

Hi cscs,

Removed nomodeset. Shutdown, restarted. End up with what I consistently see, a blank/black screen. Never see a splash screen.

Removed quiet. System spews to screen until it hits Trigger uevents. Then turns black. Couple of seconds later monitor reports No Signal. Then sleeps shortly thereafter.

Did try a blind login. No difference. Tried unplugging and plugging in monitor. No change.

Thanks for being so speedy.

In that case there is something else afoot.

While the amdgpu driver is somewhat newer … both gfx devices are not (i7 from 2015, radeon from ~2017)

I notice your BIOS is from 2017. Which may be old.
But I had a not so easy time looking up the model for whatever reason.
Just noting it.

I recall an old thread where amdgpu wasnt being loaded.
Though theres also the intel which I would expect to work.

Anyhoo heres that:

I guess theres also plymouth/splash though if you got some output then it may not be that.
Heres a related guide anyways:

In lieu of anything else we can also go through the steps of making sure you are up to date etc;

sudo pacman-mirrors --continent
sudo pacman -Syu
sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-linux
sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-modesetting
sudo mkinitcpio -P
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

That should sort mirrors, update, install drivers, rebuild intramfs, refresh grub.
And would normally result in a working system.

If you have made any other configurations, such as in /etc/{modprobe,X11} or similar, then please make sure to mention those.

Thanks for the ideas. I’ve tried finding a new version of the BIOS. No luck. Will try again. No changes to other configurations. Will work through the rest and get back tomorrow.

Please see this topic which may help you getting the GPU to work - ignore the info for Nvidia.

Specifically note that you may need to enable early kms as described.

Thanks. Have some things to take care of before I get on this. Will be back later today.

I started in the Graphics/Display forum because I thought I was having an issue with the display driver. History of work done here: Graphics Forum Question And Data.

I have updated all Manjaro components to the latest and greatest. Bios is old. But have not found an update anywhere. Nor had a response in the forums for information.

Nothing tried was successful in resolving a no display on boot. Brief synopsis: System boots. Screen displays a “no signal” message after a few seconds. Then goes into sleep mode. This happens when I use GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash udev.log_priority=3" If I add nomodeset monitor has output.

I am new to Linux. But somewhat experienced in computer troubleshooting. I kept digging around the internet. Spent some period of time using journalctl to speed read logs. Noticed a pattern. Log in “random” places repeated

I ended up using: sudo journalctl -o short-precise -k -b -2 -r to get me the last 50 lines of a boot where I had a no signal scenario. The error was one of the last things before I force power down the computer. If I understand correctly, this error indicated an inability to find/initialize the HDMI port.

Step one remove plymouth - make notes in case you later want to revert

[HowTo] Disable or Remove Plymouth (boot splash)

Step two

Check the configuration of kernel mode settting.

As disabling modesetting gives you image on screen it could be related to the default of enabling kms in mkinitcpio.conf.

Black Screen with Plymouth - Cause and Solution - #2 by linux-aarhus

So I’d say remove quiet, splash from kernel cmdline in grub - and kms from mkinitcpio.conf HOOKS and - if you added it - i915 - from mkinitcpio MODULES.

i7-6700K - this is a desktop CPU right ? not a dual GPU laptop ?

Hi Linux-aarhus,

sorry for being tardy in responding. I thought I had this thread flagged to e-mail me. Will work on the suggestions today.

manjarno-newb

Yes it is a desktop CPU.

Hi linux-aarhus,

Went through all of the steps requested, sequentially undoing previous changes between. Then did both together. Did not see any difference. Still no output to screen. Screen times out from no input source and goes into sleep mode Last 20-30 lines in the reverse journalctl looked exactly like the ones above.
