Install a driver for Nineplus USB WiFi Adapter 802.11AC 1200 (rtl88x2bu)

I have a .sh install file for a driver for a usb wifi adapter but I 've tried to follow some vids and the wiki but haven’t succeeded. could someone please help me. I made it executable then ran various mhwd options but do not see the new driver being installed. thanks

Hi @loimp ,
I wonder wether you could post the output of the following terminal command, in order to provide you some help.

inxi -Fazy

Regards,

I have it but don’t remember the proper method for posting . let me find it

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information.
  1. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
sudo inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.

Have you already :mag: for your problem in the forum ? (Wisdom lies in asking → listening → reading  )

Are you really sure the driver is not already included in the kernel ?

hmmm. no I’m not sure . forgot about that possibility . thanks . I’ll check

HI, j8a, andreas85 ,

Thank you guys. add or remove is showing 2 different pkgs in the AUR ; 1 for driver RTL88xBU updated for current kernels; the other is a - Kernel module for Realtek RTL88xBU WIFI Chipset

I went thru this same exact issue few? months back but never got the newest adapter working. been using the old one . want to to try to get the new 1 working . have a different situ. . better router and access to it .

Moderator edit: In the future, please use proper formatting: [HowTo] Post command output and file content as formatted text

I just looked at the old posts from when I got help with this before - on how to edit the build file in the AUR for a package . could someone guide me thru that process with this driver or help me to install the driver I have that came with the adapter/dongle ?

I think the exact model of the adapter or lsusb is pretty important here. Or inxi -v7azy which contains it too.

@ Teo

here is output from both - let me know if this is wrong format.

I see only this adapter and you said that is the old one? Is the new connected?

yes . the new one is also plugged in . this link is it .Nineplus USB WiFi Adapter 802.11AC 1200Mbps Dual 5Dbi Antennas 5G/2.4G for PC Desktop Laptop MAC Win10/8/8.1/7/Vista/XP/Mac10.6-10.15 - Nineplus usb wifi adapter wifi adapter 1200mbps

a driver came with it for Linux and Win . I copied the disk in my laptop to a usb and have it here .

maybe I need to upgrade the kernel

Yes i saw it on the site. So, it is rtl88x2bu.
Read about AUR, and kernel modules, and DKMS. For example

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dynamic_Kernel_Module_Support

And after you read and understand everything you will be ready to install dkms module from aur

pamac install base-devel git linux61-headers dkms
pamac build rtl88x2bu-dkms-git

BUT: i do not see it in the lsusb. It should have been there, even without a driver. Are you sure the port works? Is there any light on the adapter?

Edit: I have personally yet not used DKMS in Manjaro. That is why reading is important and not just copy pasting (because what i wrote might contain errors). I had initially wrote sudo systemctl --now enable dkms but Yochanan pointed out it will not be needed.
Strictly speaking you only need dkms and base-devel as dependencies, the rest should be pulled automatically at some point, but included them just to be on the safe side.
p.s. if you decide to use 6.4 kernel, above will be linux64-headers, but you currently are on 6.1

the ports are working for other devices , there’s no light on it. I will read all of that . thank you .

I already installed them both. maybe thats why it doesn’t show. borked everything

XY Problem detected: You’re asking about your attempted solution rather than your actual problem. This leads to enormous amounts of wasted time and energy, both on the part of people asking for help, and on the part of those providing help.

You already have a kernel driver installed. Why are you trying to install something else?

this adapter is 13 years old. I bought a new one in the hopes it might improve wifi reception.

You need to run inxi -Nazy (only shows the Network info) while the new adapter is connected. How can anyone help you if we don’t even know what network adapter you have?

This is his old card. The new one…is neither in the inxi nor in lsusb, and i don’t understand how could this be possible, if the port works, and the adapter works, and it is in the port and makes good contact and has electricity… :person_shrugging:

Ah, since @Teo has everything covered, I’m going to go play video games now. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

well, been reading . came back to check in. inxi -nazy doesn’t show the new one even tho it’s plugged in . I’ll have to think of somebody where I can take it and test it out on another machine ; make sure it works
I’ll be reading , may get back tomorrow thank you all
