No sound options in the the bios.
However adding the snd_intel_dspcfg.conf has change the icon to a speaker and the rest of the functionality looks correct, i.e. no headphone icon.
Here is the output you requested.

This feels like a solution? I wonder should this be reported to somewhere for my particular hardware combo?
However this config appears to have disabled the microphone?
Modprobe option forces use of legacy driver snd_hda_intel
The legacy driver does not support internal digital microphone
so this is a good workaround if you don’t need use of internal microphone
Sadly I do need the internal microphone…
So near yet so far!

well, let’s play around. learning by doing, change the option value from 1 to 2. reboot, check and report.
sorry, i was wrong, test 3 instead of 1.
I have learned a done, both had the correct icon, both have caveats

The issue isn’t that the device doesn’t work, its that the speakers are appearing as headphones.
At all times the speakers have worked, its that in gnome and possibly the layers beneath it has been decided that the internal speakers on this laptop are headphones.
It’s either a very silly superficial problem or something else.
ALSA information shows speaker output is detected correctly
[ 6.142777] snd_hda_codec_realtek ehdaudio0D0: autoconfig for ALC294: line_outs=1 (0x17/0x0/0x0/0x0/0x0) type:speaker
If audio plays to speakers without problems it is likely just a naming error in the HiFi profile created by ALSA Use Case Manager alsa-ucm
It might be possible to change the description device.profile.description = "Headphones"
in PulseAudio
pacmd update-source-proplist alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3-platform-skl_hda_dsp_generic.HiFi__hw_sofhdadsp__sink device.profile.description = "Speaker"`
But it might not change the port name shown in GUI controls and notifications
Optimal solution for this would be:
get more information about ALSA Use Case Manager and upload it to an online pastebinalsaucm -c hw:0 dump text
Open an issue report at https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-ucm-conf and include Laptop model name Asus ZenBook UX363EA and audio codec ALC294 in the title
When describing the problem mention that this system does not have a 3.5mm jack, only speakers, and audio is working normally despite the incorrect sink port name
include links to uploaded information from alsa-info.sh and alsaucm
I’ve raised the Issue as directed, thank you for your advice.
Will post back here if there are any developments.
