I suddenly lost external display HDMI output on nvidia driver overnight

Hi everyone! I’ve been dealing with this issue for a couple of days now and I am really confused, let me set the picture: the computer is new, has been running only Win11 for the last 6 months. Recently I decided to make the switch again and try Linux and to my surprise all distros I live booted had immediate dual screen support. This has been a problem before and I was pleased to find that with new drivers I had to do zero tinkering.

I installed Manjaro and was very satisfied for about 2 weeks, when it just stopped working from one session to another. The system booted in the morning on only one screen while I turned it off the night before working fine on two. No updates, driver changes - at least to my knowledge. I was surprised, tried open source driver, this resolved the issue, but since I game, it was not ideal. Later I did a full reinstall, no change. What I noticed, however, was that even live usbs started showing on only one screen, while before they had no problem displaying on two, regardless of the distro, and I did some distro hopping before settling.

Full wipe, reinstall (Win 10 + Manjaro on 2 partitions) and the problem persists, I am truly at a loss, don’t know what I am missing, what changed in my setup. Could you assist me in finding the problem? I am really eager to learn and I just can’t get a grip on that one. Any advice will be truly appreciated, have a great day all!

In my experience - nothing does that - what did you change ?

The APU 7840HS using 780GPU has kernel driver so no big surprise.

From your systeminfo all looks good

I recall there was a quirk with mhwd where disrcrete gpu went black if it was Nvidia.

I suggest you consult the comment number two in the recent stable announcement - issues and solutions and possibly use this comment [Stable Update] 2024-06-10 - Kernels, Systemd, NVIDIA, Mesa, Qt5 - #74 by Yochanan .

Just for the future, if you happy how your system works. Then just create a snapshot with Timeshift and if you run into a issue, you just can restore your system with a few mouse clicks and lean back.

Thank you for the reply! As for what I changed: I honestly don’t know, haven’t been tinkering for a good couple of days and I can’t remember, so must’ve been something accidental.

The thread you directed me too had my answer, I edited modprobe.d and now the system starts with both screens working perfectly well. Thank you so much!

I am curious however, since this was something that affected both installed system AND live USBs of different distros, is there a possible answer as to why? I always thought live USBs were a closed system (they in fact sometimes worked worse when installed than in live versions a good couple of years back, as I recall), but as I said, I am still learning so I have no way to recognize the issue.

Anyway, I am very grateful for the help and bookmarking the thread for future reference

I did! I went back a good 4 days and it still was not working, I was really stumped! But thank you for the suggestion!
