I need help debugging/solving a hibernation issue with my NVIDIA GPU (non-free driver)

For some reason my PC has issues with sleep and hibernating so I recently tried to fix at least the hibernating issue since even my Windows on another drive struggles with sleep (apparently a CPU problem, PC power LED blinks, when woken up PC starts but no [display] output).

I found no related recent threads about this here besides:

Situation: (hibernation)

When hibernating the PC successfully shuts down after taking some time to supposedly swap memory to the swapfile.
When starting the PC the hibernation fails and it starts like a normal restart (nvidia 0000:01:00.0: PM: failed to quiesce async: error -5, PM: hibernation: resume failed (-5)).

sudo dmesg | grep -iE 'hibernate|resume|swap|error'

To test if this was an NVIDIA issue I disconnected the power cable from my NVIDIA GPU and deleted the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-mhwd.conf (wasn’t even needed when I later connected it again).

In the BIOS I enabled my IGPU again (auto, was disabled before) and set the IG adapter to IGD (was PEG) before that [EDIT: I also plugged in my DP and HDMI cable into the motherboard instead of the GPU].

Suddenly the hibernation worked without issues which is why I think the issue could be connected to my NVIDIA GPU configuration.

My changes to enable hibernation:

So first of all I have a luks encrypted ext4 root NVME drive (created by the Manjaro installer) without a swap partition so I created a swapfile and mounted it on /swapfile following the Manjaro Wiki Tutorial:

  1. Create swap file (Swap - Manjaro)

Create a swapfile and make it only readable and writable by root:

    # For 32 GB of RAM
    sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=38912 status=progress
    sudo chmod 600 /swapfile

    Format and enable the swapfile:

    sudo mkswap /swapfile
    sudo swapon /swapfile
    # Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 38 GiB (40802185216 bytes)
    # no label, UUID=906f88f0-1edc-4b44-ab7f-089d6e522696

Verify that the swap file was enabled correctly:

    swapon
    # NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO
    # /swapfile file 38G 601,7M -2

  2. Ensure that the swapfile is available at boot

Add entry to /etc/fstab (/swapfile none swap defaults 0 0):

    sudo nano /etc/fstab

    # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
    #
    # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a device; this may
    # be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices that works even if
    # disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
    #
    # <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    UUID=794A-9731                            /boot/efi      vfat    umask=0077 0 2
    /dev/mapper/luks-2b42ed68-695e-40de-89a9-5529c6443177 / ext4 defaults,noatime 0 1
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0
    UUID=4f354c10-a98c-4ab3-8c9b-24fc47f4f32a  /mnt/data_drive_2025  btrfs  defaults  0  0
    /swapfile none swap defaults 0 0

  3. Add resume parameter to grub bootloader

Get the UUID of the swapfile:

    sudo blkid
    # /dev/mapper/luks-2b42ed68-695e-40de-89a9-5529c6443177: UUID="28ded8b9-5fef-4e19-a03d-d0a72520a007" BLOCK_SIZE="4096" TYPE="ext4"
    # /dev/nvme1n1p2: UUID="2b42ed68-695e-40de-89a9-5529c6443177" TYPE="crypto_LUKS" PARTLABEL="root" PARTUUID="4f28b7b0-dffd-cf4d-aba2-5ace144cd80a"
    # /dev/nvme1n1p1: UUID="794A-9731" BLOCK_SIZE="512" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="3c72ba79-1956-cf44-9f6f-6a3db6c34a5

The unlocked LUKS encrypted drive has the UUID 28ded8b9-5fef-4e19-a03d-d0a72520a007.

The swapfile /swapfile has the following offset:

    sudo filefrag -v /swapfile | awk '{if($1=="0:"){print $4}}' | sed 's/\.\.//'
    # 153231360

Using this information I edited the bootloader to point to the unlocked drive and the swapfile (using the offset):

    sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Add to the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT at the end resume=UUID=28ded8b9-5fef-4e19-a03d-d0a72520a007 resume_offset=153231360.

    Update grub:

    sudo update-grub

  4. Make sure that initramfs includes resume support

    sudo nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

Find the HOOKS= line and make sure it includes resume after encrypt:

HOOKS=(base udev autodetect modconf kms block keyboard keymap consolefont plymouth encrypt resume filesystems fsck)

    Regenerate initramfs:

    sudo mkinitcpio -P

  5. Restart your whole PC so the changes come into effect

Steps I tried:

(It didn’t work before I ran these steps and the changes do not seem to have any meaningful effect)

sudo systemctl enable nvidia-hibernate.service
sudo systemctl enable nvidia-suspend.service
sudo systemctl enable nvidia-resume.service
sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1
options nvidia NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var/tmp

Historic changes regarding my NVIDIA GPU:

When I tried Wayland for the first time successfully I followed this thread in the Manjaro Forum and added nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia-drm.fbdev=1 to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub.

I can’t remember any other changes I did otherwise.

Hi, I only briefly skimmed through your inxi, but as a former Nvidia sufferer, here are two tips…

  • Increase your swap to at least RAM+VRAM, i.e. approx. 40GB.
  • Try to move all modules and module parameters to modprobe.d or moduls-load.d.

Ok I repeated the steps but with the maximum size value 64GB instead of 38GB:

sudo swapoff /swapfile
sudo rm /swapfile
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=65536
# ...
# Setting up swapspace version 1, size = 64 GiB (68719472640 bytes)
# no label, UUID=abd6c3f1-1a90-487d-9da7-0193bd5d74b3
# ...
# NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO
# /swapfile file 64G 0B -2
# ...
# 20809728

Then I also removed the following line in /etc/defaults/grub:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nvidia_drm.modeset=1 nvidia-drm.fbdev=1"

And added it on top of my previously created file /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf:

options nvidia_drm modeset=1 fbdev=1
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1
options nvidia NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var/tmp

I checked what other mods are loaded in /etc/modules-load.d/ and /etc/modprobe.d/ (there were more files but only empty/commented lines):

# /etc/modules-load.d/mhwd-gpu.conf

It didn’t work (started just like a normal restart) but my logs look quite a bit different, and i got for a split second a terminal output before the login page:

I couldn’t see any errors in the boot previous to the memory corruption issues, it looked just like that one (same hibernate lines).

Funnily enough I found that if I disable this option (See ArchWiki as source to why you would need it: NVIDIA/Tips and tricks - ArchWiki), the system hibernates.
Only problem is though that electron apps become black windows and plasmashell stops working after you log in.
Apps like xournalpp were restored perfectly though.

I tried one more time after an unsuccessful boot and changed the file to:

options nvidia_drm modeset=1 fbdev=1
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=0
#options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1
#options nvidia NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var/tmp

This is a screenshot of a the hibernated system: (I blurred email address and names but the plasma “blur” is how it actually looks.

This time I was able to run:

plasmashell --replace &

Checking the logs plasmashell did not throw a Graphics Exception (just kwin_wayland?):

Which allowed me to get my system back but the electron application stays dead/black:

I rebooted after this one and hibernated again (and then hibernated that system once more) which had the same outcome (plasmashell --replace wasn’t immediately possible but after 20s it replaced the broken instance).
The electron application was dead, i needed to force close it but restarting it after that was possible as if nothing happened.

I don’t understand why NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=0 helps, but Linux with nvidia is weird. Sleep and hibernation also broke all the time with my gtx 970 xt.

What strikes me right now, because I recently switched from a system with BIOS to UEFI…
you could try removing resume and resume_offset in GRUB, since the information is actually also stored in a UEFI variable.
This should make that message disappear. (did in my case)
not shure, but maybe it change something to the better.

But…Even if it appears to be functioning properly, there always seems to be a certain amount of error messages remaining. My AMD GPU is stable, but the ASUS B650E-F does not appear to be fully compliant.

Otherwise, it would be uninteresting.

That is very cool.

I deleted the resume=... resume_offset=... out of /etc/default/grub and hibernation was still possible after a restart and grub update!

So all those steps are apparently actually unnecessary thanks to systemd even though I am using a swap file instead of a swap partition?

Funnily enough the error message still shows:

Also as followup, plasmashell can not be replaced for the first 20s because it auto exits with the following error:

# $ plasmashell --replace &
kf.dbusaddons: Failed to register name 'org.kde.plasmashell' with DBUS - does this process have permission to use the name, and do no other processes own it already?

[1] + exit 1 plasmashell --replace

Also somehow when I just tried again without the option:

options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=0

it hibernated fine, but it seemed to take a little bit longer.

It also didn’t kill the electron application (window was black until I entered with my mouse), … until I hibernated once more and then the electron application died again.

So I guess the only problem I have now is electron applications dying (which I don’t really care that much about) and the plasmashell death which is kinda annoying.
