An alternative that works for me is to perform a two-step shutdown. Step 1. Log out of the Desktop to the LightDM screen or whatever you use. Step 2. Execute shutdown or Reboot from the LightDM (or…) screen. This process seems not to hang and flows promptly without problems for me.
