HP EliteBook 830 G8 hang on shutdown on battery

Hello. I have an issue with kernel 5.14 (i have used 5.13 50 - 90 min before system update).
When notebook works on battery and i execute “reboot”, “shutdown -h now”, “systemctl poweroff” and etc, or just press “Shutdown” from GUI or Poweroff button, - system hang with black screen and blinking “Caps lock”. “Caps lock” identificate abnormal situation.
The same situation appears sometimes when i connect the power supply.
the dmesg don’t contain any regarding errors , but 1 time i saw “kernel panic - not sycing” (or smth like) before black screen appears.
I have tried to return on 5.13 but the issue still exists.

And the 2nd problem - battery is losing charge in shutdown state ~ 8% per hour (full shutdown, not hibernation, suspend or other like modes).

PS: i have tried to switch off all menu options in BIOS regarding power management in most of combinations. Before Manjaro i have try Ubuntu and there weren’t any issues with power. Battery worked near 10 hours in two days without charging with working hibernation and suspend mode. There was a lot of other problems with fprintd and LTE module and i decide to use Manjaro.

PPS: I face with system hang on any module load with “insmod” when i work on battery. The same operation with connected power supply goes without issues.

PPPS: Issues with Hibernation and Suspend. System hang (kernel panic) on resume after suspend. I have tried add intel_lpss_pci to initramfs and change RuntimeWatchdogSec value but it didn’t help. Hibernation mode looks like just shutdown. This issues reproduced on battery and on AC.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and press the three dots below your post and press the :pencil2: to give us more information so we can see what’s really going on.
Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information for us to be able to help you. (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

:+1:

Thank you for the reply. I have added inxi output to the post and some additional notes in “PPS”. about log, json, dmesg there are no any records about kernel errors or acpi, just about kde widgets.

It is funny…
I have added one module to the kernel external modules folder, run “depmod” and “mkinitcpio -p linux514” and now all work flawlessly. not issues with hang on reboot.

If you could provide the exact module name and the exact steps you took, and click the 3 dots below the answer to mark a solution like this below your answer:
Solution
so that the next person that has the exact same problem you just had will benefit from your post as well!

Hello. Module doesn’t correlate with the issue, i just try to enable LTE on my laptop with xmm7360. When i tried to load module system hang on battery.
Command “depmod” solve the issue  but exactly i don’t clue how.
But problem with battery charge isn’t resolved.
And one more problem rise. I have added it to my main post.

Ah sorry! In that case, please read this:

Especially the Linux has multiple kernels section.

Then install an LTS kernel and all your problems will go away…

:+1:

Hello.
I have install LTS kernel, Hibernation start working as expected.
But suspend - not . Caps Lock not blinking, but system can’t start.

What exactly i have:
Kernel 5.10
btrfs with full disk encryption (with /boot) secure boot + luks1 + tpm2.0 + swapfile - all is working
xmm7360-pci (LTE modem) from git - is working
hibernation - work
suspend - not

Kernel 5.14
btrfs with full disk encryption (with /boot) secure boot + luks1 +tpm2.0 + swapfile - all is working
xmm7360-pci (LTE modem) from git - is working but xmm7360.c have to modified on 1322 line to “.write_room = (unsigned int (*)(struct tty_struct *)) xmm7360_tty_write_room,”
hibernation don’t work
suspend - dont’t work
some issues on battery but command “depmod” and mkinitcio -p linux514 solve this problem.
what i try to do to enable hibernation and suspend on 5.14

  1. change resume=UUID= to resume=/dev/mapper/…
  2. MAJ:MIN from lsblk echoed to /sys/power/resume
  3. resume_offset value to /sys/power/resume_offset
  4. modify /etc/systemd/system.conf and sleep.conf according man and arch wiki
  5. add (it is needed, it is absent in config after system install) “resume” to HOOKS in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf (in the end of string, a i have tried other places also)
  6. Have tried to add Environment variable to ignore memory check in systemd services.
    Nothing helps.

I am noted the difference in journalctl -b 0 on 5.10 and 5.14:
kernel 5.14 write error that it does not know about commands “splash” and “cryptdevice=” in grub command line.

I can’t help you any further, sorry!

:sob:
