How to mount CDROM?

Hi
I’m struggling to mount/read cdrom. I think the device works, I can read/rip my audio cd. But I can’t read any data cdrom. The cdrom I’m testing is also ok, has been read on other devices. Below the information for support. I can also say that KDE partition manager does not show iso9660 as supported.

Thanks for helping

KDE dolphin does not show the cd. I also tried as root “mount /dev/sr0 /mnt”, getting

mount: /mnt: fsconfig system call failed: /dev/sr0: Can't open blockdev.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

It should not be necessary - when your device is correctly identified and a readable disk is inserted - you should be able to access it from the file manager.

Insert a disc into your optical reader then mount

sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt

I just tested using a portable LITEON cd/dvd writer - no issues reading a data disk.

Also tested with my laptop - attaching the same device - filemanager can access just fine.

I vaguely recall a rare issue from the past where the iso9660 filesystem library would not load correct - but many years has passed since then.

As I recall the issue may occur if you have not restarted your system after a kernel update/upgrade.

Hi Aarhus, thanks for your kind reply. Yes I read your past message, and before submitting my message above, on doing an uname -rv I found that I had a kernel mismatch. Before opening the issue here, I did a reboot, but sadly issue is still there.

For info, I also tried the mount /dev/cdrom instead of mount /dev/sr0, but result is the same :frowning:

At the moment I guess the major hint is about the iso9660, not perceived as available in kde partition manager.

I now tried forcing a sudo modprobe isofs then sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt and dmesg states:

mount: attempt to access beyond end of device
               sr0: rw=0, sector=64, nr_sectors = 4 limit=0
isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=sr0, iso_blknum=16, block=16

Any ideas?

As you state you can easily read an audio cd then one assumes the drive itself is working.

That could indicate - in case of a cd-rw media either empty or damaged media.

:man_shrugging:

You could also try using the logs (read the man page for more settings, there is, e.g. a --follow option that might be of interest):

journalctl -S <enter a date>

Just tried that using an old CD I know has some errors (from 2003):

Suffice it to say, the journal is a nosy bastard. Which is a good thing. 8)

I’m sure there are other ways to get even more info. The experts on these things will hopefully step in and reveal all the secrets. 8)

Looks to me like copy-protection, which Linux and the CD drive cannot handle. Copy-Protection in the sense of placed errors on the CD to protect the CD from reading and ripping. Normal CD-Players don’t care about such errors.

Hi, for the records, I think I’m on the same line of thought as in:

  1. cdrom contains my MRI
  2. cdrom created/burned in Germany by a German doctor studio
  3. cd drive is embedded in my iMac running Manjaro, iMac I bought in Italy
  4. I tried to read with success the same cdrom on my laptop, that I bought in UK
  5. laptop runs same version of Manjaro as my iMac

So my catch is that the cd driver implements some “logic”, thinks it is an “italian” unit, the cdrom is “german”, hence the error. I stop investigating, “solution” was to copy the cdrom content between computers via a usb stick at hand.

I spare you all my comments/thoughts on corporations approach to IT (Apple, cd drive oem, lawyers, copyright laws and whatsmore …)

Thanks fore the help!
