How to enable grayscale effect in the whole screen in KDE?

From various sources I tried to get the result in my system, many answers suggested one github repository : GitHub - murat-cileli/kwin-grayscale-effect: KWin Grayscale Effect

But even after following all the steps I was not able to turn on the thing in my system. Kindly help with the issue.

I will be glad if you could fulfill my request.

You’re about 9 months too late. That effect works with Plasma 5. Manjaro implemented Plasma 6 in May, 2024.

Is there some other alternative to implement that effect on my system, because even GNOME has a direct solution for this effect, why is it so hard to implement in KDE?

There is a fork that works on Plasma 6 at:

This is what I just did to install it successfully on my system:

Download https://github.com/lliurex/kwin-grayscale-effect/archive/refs/heads/plasma6.zip & extract the file.

From within the directory created when you extracted the file, run the following command:

kpackagetool6 --type KWin/Effect --install kwin6_effect_grayscale

You should then have the option available in your System Settings:

I can’t guarantee that it will work properly (for example, I noticed that my autohide panel stopped hiding itself when the effect was active). So, you might want to keep an eye on the original & fork just in case further changes are made.

Thank you Sir Scott, it’s working.

I’m glad it is working for you :grinning:

If you ever need to completely remove the grayscale effect, just open a terminal and run this command:

kpackagetool6 --type KWin/Effect --remove kwin6_effect_grayscale
