How to create my own NAS?

I have a spare computer with 32 GB RAM and I also have 4 old hard drives with almost 4 TB of space.

I was looking at buying a NAS but then I noticed that I could install something like OpenMediaVault on my spare computer and turn it into a NAS. This way I make use of my spare.

But, before I do that, I just wanted to know whether Manjaro has anything similar.

First of all, I don’t need special automated backups or anything. I just want to be able to access the drives from my main computer that I use. This spare computer would be on another floor and I would install my 4 hard drives in there.

I was reading about Samba. Could I just install Manjaro and Samba on my spare and just access my drives using Samba?

I think one issue I need to make sure I manage if I use Samba is waking my spare computer when it’s asleep. Can Samba handle that? I know OpenMediaVault has that functionality. But, from reading more about this, I think it’s also dependent on my motherboard too.

If someone could give me a few tips on this, or OpenMediaVault or whether just buying a NAS is the better solution, that would be greatly appreciated.

I’d probably go with OMV.

I mean, that’s what it’s designed for, and at the worst you’d be out a couple of hours if you can’t get it to work.

Ok, thanks for your thoughts.
