How to change a DNS so it will keep after reboot?
I got wired connection and zero skill.
click the network icon (right click)
edit connection
select yours
go to IPv4 tab
change method from automatic (DHCP) to automatic (DHCP), addresses only
in that same tab a little lower is the DNS server input box
take a second and hover your mouse over the field - it will show a tooltip - how you have to write more than one DNS server address (comma separated)
do the same for IPv6
or disable one of the two (IPv4 or IPv6)
save
done
Simplest - ask your IT friend to change it
Also simple - click on network icon in your panel, go to its settings, find DNS settings, put here your DNS servers and save
Let’'s not forget the router - on the LAN tab I see DHCP Server Configuration and put my DNS in there.
It will not work without changing router’s settings?
Don’t ever fiddle with DNS unless you know what you are doing.
If you - despite the warning - want to
Damn how even the change of DNS server can make such a disaster
Yes it will work.
You can change it on either one device - or on both.
Not everyone has access to the router settings of the router they are using/being connected to.
(if it is not your own, for instance)
What I described will work - but just for the machine (yours) you make this change on.
Which is what you wanted, I presume.
When you change the router settings, it will affect all the devices that connect through it.
What desaster? -
It’s literally only five or six clicks and you are done.
On the Enterprise you could have said:
Computer! Change my DNS server to the one I want, please!
The computer then would have asked you clarifying questions and had then done it for you.
Following click instructions is just as easy …
This is what I mean under “disaster”. Backup files, make notes and etc…
just follow what I said
first post after your initial one
Is it that hard to follow?
Is it not working?
Don’t make it more complicated than it is.
What he is saying is equally valid - when (or before) you are going to change any files, make backups of them
so yo can easily go back to what it was.
What I described didn’t involve changing any files - I just described the GUI clicky process of achieving what you wanted.
If you are not changing any files directly - you may ignore what he said.
It looks slightly different for me, but:
Yes!
Like this.
You are likely using Plasma/KDE - which you didn’t mention.
That would explain the difference in appearance.
actually:
the theme you use looks like a pretty ancient one
… nothing wrong with that - I just can’t tell what DE this is from the looks of it …
Awww heck nawww. It’s work, the thing I need to work isn’t.
So ye, thanks, sorry for that…
that, to me, is a contradictory statement
it works (how do you know?)
or it doesn’t (how do you know?)
Both can’t be true at the same time.
I’m beginning to feel trolled and am losing interest.
I mean I needed to make one thing to work, I needed to change DNS for that.
I changed DNS, it’s still doesn’t work, but the DNS changed successfully.
So ye your method worked, I just mean other thing outside this topic doesn’t.
so your expectation, your premise, might not have been correct:
in that:
it wasn’t the DNS which made it “not work”
as you just demonstrated
have you heard of the XY Problem?
look for what it means - your issue sounds just like it
Of course. DNS didn’t make stuff worse.
The point is there was thing which is not working.
It gave me two options: change DNS or other option
So I tested first will it work if I will change DNS, it never worked, so I need to test second option now.
Changing DNS have done nothing wrong long story short.
… and it is not expected that using a different DNS server will make things worse …
you keep being cryptic - not asking about what you are actually having problems with
oh well
Yes I asked how to solve it. Received these two options.
So there’s ahh how to say… You like need to test both to find out…
that response is even more vague and cryptic
no substance to go on
If you don’t want to tell what problem you want to solve: ok
but then, why even ask?
most of us don’t own a crystal ball, you know? …
the DNS isn’t the issue
seems to be the consensus here, now.
