How is this "can't connect to WIFI" title any different from others?

Hey there, it is my first thread. It’s nice to be here and see such an active community  I thought about how to name the title because of recommendations, but it also just became a generic title. Sorry about that

Hello, because I live in a region at a higher altitude, I have no cable connection. Whenever spring comes and the sap shoots into the trees my wireless internet also gets a bit worse and that’s why I got a second (prepaid) router since last year. Meanwhile I’m using Manjaro KDE (Am a bit of a noob) on the laptop and can connect fine to the Ethernet and my regular router - but when I want to use the second (prepaid) router I can’t connect. I already tried ignoring the IPv6 via NetworkManager, tried all possible encryptions (WPA2/WPA3), as open or hidden network and even without encryption and password it doesn’t work.
I have read the following logs, followed some “traces”, but do not know if other threads are related to my problem.

I could also give the logs from “journalctl -f” and “dmesg -w”, but do not want to flood the post at first, but only if someone says it is needed.
I am hopeful to get this set up, with some help  thanks in advance!
Cheers

You could try using the r8169 module, just disable the r8168

Unfortunately not the solution. Just cut my cable connection, and reinstalled the module/package.

Has wifi connection via this router ever worked?
Does it work with other devices?
Or is just your Manjaro machine affected?

You said you tried different encryption options and no encryption as well - you’d have to have used the ethernet connection to re-configure the router to do this,
so that part works.
Correct?

In the logs
journalctl -f
and
sudo dmesg -w
there should be relatively clear messages of what is going on during a connection attempt and whether a connection is established or for what reason it fails.

re a possible different failure mode:
How is that router connected to the internet?
What is different between this and the other (older?) one?
How was this connected?

Yes! I can connect to this router with my phone and my Windows Desktop. It just does not work with the Manjaro machine! Yes, you’re right: yesterday I also tried to set the WIFI (!) settings in the router interface via browser and in the network manager via Ethernet (works without troubles, just plugged the cable in and it works) from said router, but I was not able to set up the WIFI-connection.

Journalctl -f says:

The newer “router” is actually a mobile box, works through sim card and should work anywhere. Could this be a problem? I hadn’t thought of that at all. Cable still works.

The “older” router goes to a switch that runs to an antenna.

Thanks in advance.

This line in the association and authentication sequence is different from what I see happening with my working connection.
This seems to be the point where it starts to fail, to go wrong.

device (p2p-dev-wlp3s0)
looks strange to me

It’s a different device, a special configuration that you maybe did inadvertantly in NetworkManager?

It should just be
device (wlp3s0)

From a very cursory look around I found this:

[Solved] Wifi dont set up : "Failed to enable P2P Device interface" / Installation / Arch Linux Forums

where the reason for failure was a conflict because both systemd-networkd.service and NetworkManager.service where active simultaneously.

There should only be one, not both.

systemctl list-unit-files --type=service | grep enabled

(second column is the current value, third column is the default - look at the second column)

Check whether that is the case for you and if so, disable systemd-networkd.service
… or disable NetworkManager.service but then (I think) you can’t use the wifi-applet in your panel …

Thanks for your effort, Nachlese!
I tried both; I turned off systemd-networkd, but then the Ethernet port also stopped working. Although I wanted to try the network manager, after disabling systemd-networkd the GUI of the network manager disappeared, manual IP config didn’t work then either. Then I had to use Timeshift. After restoring systemd-networkd was disabled, network manager was on. Have now also tried again manually not via dhcp but statically, then I could connect to the router - but it was restricted. Meanwhile I think it could be a driver problem of the network card. I did a kernel update the other day, maybe I’ll try a downgrade.

Did you try kernel 5.10?
