How do you install the standalone version of Proton

There are a few Windows only engines like RPG Maker or some indie titles, that may work on WINE but sometimes have issues. Most advice using Proton to work around various bugs in WINE. I want to try that but without going through other software like Steam or Lutris.

The problem is that I can’t find a package for the binary: I only see packages for using it such as protontricks or protonutils but no proton package. Is it only available in third-party databases like AUR, or is it not possible to install it as a library that lets you run executables with proton mygame.exe the same way you use wine mygame.exe?

Of course not; there’s neither any such thing as “the standalone version” of Proton nor a “binary”.

I understand, thanks. Someone mentioned that Proton is a fork of WINE used by Steam and other platforms: I thus expected there would be a binary for it to launch software just like WINE. It must be meant to be used as a library instead.

The question then would be how do you run an exe using Proton instead of WINE? I presume you must need another launcher such as Lutris.

Be careful who you listen to. I don’t know much about proton, but the way I’d describe it is…

Proton is developed by Valve and CodeWeavers developers - as a collection of software and libraries, it also brings a patched version of Wine.

It is not a simple thing :stuck_out_tongue: it’s too big for my brain and too complicated for a click click install.

Proton is intended to be used in Steam.
There are modified version of WINE with most Proton patches and more like GloriousEggroll’s WINE on GitHub. You can install them in Lutris for example to use with your Windows programs.

There does seem to be a launcher in the repo. :man_shrugging:

multilib/umu-launcher 1.1.4-2
This is the Unified Launcher for Windows Games on Linux, to run Proton with fixes outside of Steam

Wonderful, that seems like the closest and easiest solution which I’m glad Manjaro provides by default, thank you!

Lutris does also offer the option to install various versions of proton. It can be found in where the wine versions can be managed.
