How do I know if im using x11 or wayland?

Hi community, I would like to know what is x11 and wayland and how can i know wich im using.

Additional to the other info, when you login on Gnome you will see a cog icon in the bottom-right.
In that menu “gnome” (the top option) is Wayland, & “gnome on xorg” is x11.

The term x11 & xorg seem to be used interchangeably. I am not clear on the exact difference.
