High power usage on kernel 5 or Errno18 on kernel 4

In 2019 I used kernel 4.19 and was quite happy with it, but then I upgraded to 5.x and got a noticeable increase in temperature and fan speeds. I didn’t really understood that it depended on the kernel and thought it was something to do with the features in the new version of Manjaro, but now I decided to downgrade the kernel to 4.19 and found that the notebook became cool and quiet as before with the same version of Manjaro. Switching it back to 5.xx makes it hot and loud again. I tried “recommended” 5.4 and 5.10 and “experimental” 5.16rc4…" but the power usage is always MUCH higher than with 4.19 even when the notebook is not used (it’s reported like 25W vs 8W). I can stay happy with 4.19 kernel, but there appeared a problem that I did not have before: when I try to copy a file to a removable drive such as a usb flash drive or an SD-card, I always get an error message “Cannot copy… (Errno: 18)”. When I reboot with kernel 5.x, the same file is copied to the same location fine, then I reboot with 4.19 and cannot copy anything again neither from the USB drive, nor into it. Copying files with root priveleges returns the same error. While Manjaro with kernel 4 can still copy the files from one local place to another local place without errors. Can anyone suggest something to solve it? Any solution is welcome - to lower the heat in kernel 5 or to make kernel 4 copy files to removable devices This all happens on the same manjaro version and configuration, the only thing I did is rebooted the system and selected another kernel version in GRUB.
I’ve made screenshots of power usage and powertop, but this forum does not allow me to attach images or add urls to external image hosting sites.

Provide the output of your system information inxi -Fazy and kernel message sudo dmesg.

If possible, sudo dmesg on kernel 4.x and 5.x and compare the result. I expect an erratic ACPI problem.

After you mentioned ACPI, I should note that I use the following code to turn off Nvidia card and remove it from devices. Actually, it is the thing that removes extra heat from this notebook and if something prevents it from working properly, this may explain why the notebook is so hot. Here is the code:

I’m not sure if all of it is the best solution to do the thing, but I tried many other solutions and this is the only thing that really gave noticeable decrease in temperature and fan noise on my notebook.

There’s nothing unusual on the ACPI logs for both kernel version 4 and 5.

Also check your mhwd -li. Based on your system, I suspect the driver used is either video-nvidia or video-hybrid-xxx.

Well, I ran tests with and without Nvidia disabling lines in rc.local. The result is quite surprising:
Kernel 4 with lines: 12-15 Watt (sometimes 8 Watt).
Kernel 4 without lines: 30 Watt.
Kernel 5 with lines: 30 Watt.
Kernel 5 without lines: 19 Watt.
So the positive results are kind of change places after changing the kernel version. However, kernel 4 with lines is still 5 Watts lower than kernel 5 without lines. What’s more surprising is that when I unplug the AC cable, the power consumption drops to 0.6 Watt!!! I think Nvidia card turns off completely at this moment. I wonder if it’s ever possible to get this result with the AC cable. I feel that nvidia driver is too blame, it doesn’t turn off the video card completely and doesn’t put it to power-saving mode by default. This ACPI call in rc.local is required to put it to power-saving mode, this is why nvidia driver is used instead of free driver, at least it worked before. Maybe they changed something for kernel 5 that makes it work different now. But as far as I know, free drivers don’t provide ANY possibility to disable nvidia or put it to power-savings mode.

Do you know why kernel 4 cannot copy files and what Errno 18 is? I tried to search it but found only few pages that mention this error and they don’t seem to help much.

It’s already a de facto standard for OSes, that using AC power will default the system to be in a state with higher performance and higher power consumption than with battery (typical design trade-off). Discrete graphics already support power state on its own and it’s the kernel job how to properly set the power state of the discrete graphics.

From here, it seems that kernel version 4 doesn’t handle well with NVIDIA driver 495.xx or 470.xx; in your case, it’s power management on discrete graphics is at a terrible 30 Watt. As if kernel 4 doesn’t properly manage the discrete graphics power state. Kernel 5 is the latest and should support well with the latest NVIDIA driver 495.xx and 470.xx. I say 19 Watt is still normal for a notebook. And I’m quite surprised that using battery (no AC power) reduces the power consumption to 0.6 Watt (almost the same as mobile phone on normal performance).

For me, it’s still normal since your case with kernel 5 used NVIDIA discrete graphics while the kernel 4 didn’t.

Errno 18 has something to do with UNIX / Linux system programming C programming language API as defined in the POSIX or SuS standard. Most of these APIs are a system call, and most GNU/Linux terminal commands make use of these APIs, like cp, mv, rm just to name a few.

It’s an error returned from the kernel system call which means “Invalid cross-device link”; roughly means the current operation between 2 different device isn’t allowed. In your case, this is copying from internal drive to external drive. It’s still odd though that kernel 4 return this error just for copying between drives. Maybe the respective system call is fixed in kernel 5, that’s why you can perform this opereation on kernel 5. Idk, it’s just weird.

Overall, kernel 5 seems problematic when you disable NVIDIA graphics. I can only suspect the NVIDIA driver keeps trying communicating with a ghost NVIDIA discrete graphics that you have disabled. And somehow this cause higher power consumption.

See the temperature of pch (chipset) on kernel 5, it’s too high, but CPU temperature is normal:

Chipset is the bridge of communication between CPU and others like GPU. So maybe it’s really the NVIDIA driver keeps trying to communicate with the GPU. Idk.

My advice:

  • Keep using kernel 5. Your problem with errno18 is the limitation of kernel 4, Idk. But kernel 5 has many features improvements and bug fixes, so it’s much better to use this latest version.
  • Keep the NVIDIA on, but install the hybrid driver if you still not satisfied with the current power consumption. The name is like video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime or video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime-bumblebee something via mhwd. This driver will use Intel integrated graphics by default and will use NVIDIA when there’s a need for more graphics performance. The driver you’re using now is always NVIDIA.

It feels that I have to use kernel5 because I need to copy files :slight_smile: I may want to switch to kernel 4 when I need to keep the notebook running all night, for example, for video rendering, otherwise it will be too loud on kernel 5. Initially kernel 4 could copy files to USB devices without problems, and this error seems to appear after some update, I don’t know, because I used kernel 5 only recently. Maybe clean reinstalling manjaro will fix it but I don’t have much time for it now. These rolling updates is quite a weird thing and it may brick the system. I have another notebook in different location that I use rarely, I updated it last time in April 2021, and in 31-Dec-2021 I came to that place and decided to update it and after a successful update I just couldn’t log in anymore. I could login in command line but not in GUI. I found the same post of another user and the best suggestion was to reinstall Manjaro completely, and I did the same. So you never know what these updates may result in…

My notebook has a connected heat removal system - GPU is connected with CPU by means of 2 thick copper wires that are connected to 2 fans, and when the GPU is on, it adds some heat to CPU as well, because the GPU fan turns on at 60 degrees celsius or so, and when the GPU temperature is lower than that, the heat from it goes to CPU and then to the CPU fan. It’s probably stupid, but this is how it works. So when the GPU is not used, it turns completely off, there is no heat from it, the CPU doesn’t get excessive heat and all fans are stopped, the notebook is completely quiet. When there is little load, only the CPU fan is used, and at high load both CPU and GPU fans are used. At least this is how it works in Windows. But in Linux CPU fan is on almost all the time. I hope Linux driver will work the same way like in Windows some day, but now it doesn’t.

I tried hybrid drivers a year ago, Linux just hung up with these drivers when loading no matter what I tried. Maybe something changed since that time, I will try it again later.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions, 19W on kernel 5 is still better and more quiet than 30W :slight_smile:
