Hibernate does not work

Hibernation (suspend to disk) does NOT work.
Sleep (suspend to ram) mostly works fine.

On hibernating, either of the following 2 happens:

  1. The system starts as if it was shutdown. No applications resume.
  2. During boot, the system is stuck at a blank screen. No peripherals working (keyboard seems disabled, since capslock & mute lights are not working)

Things I have ensured (consulted forum and Arch wiki):

  • /etc/mkinitcpio.conf contains the resume hook
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block keyboard keymap resume filesystems fsck"
  • /etc/default/grub also has Swap device UUID specified
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="apparmor=1 security=apparmor resume=UUID=8b6a5170-152d-42c1-b5d1-6e4016b529c4 udev.log_priority=3"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
  • Swap partition is also 20.5G, which is more than double the RAM (8G)

Happy to provide any more info to debug/fix this issue.
Thanks in advance! :slight_smile:

It is impossible to troubleshoot BIOS errors - that is an upstream kernel developer task.

I have similar messages on my system but as I rarely use hibernation I have only few ideas.

Try fiddling with the acpi daemon - perhaps add acpi settings to the kernel command line - search the arck wiki for acpi - see if there’s hints to what can be done.

Edit 2022-06-04T14:21:00Z

Perhaps your issue is related to your GPU - try searching the forum - I am fairly certain I have seen issues with hibernation using Nvidia GPU.

I also tested with the Manjaro lxqt-kwin ISO - bare metal install using Calamares → Erase disk → Swap+Hibernate option.

My bare-metal test is using Intel only.

Result is that hibernate works - the manual test is

systemctl hibernate

Yet another test

This time - I don’t have to install anything - it is functional laptop - with dual graphics - Intel Nvidia

I completely forgot I brought it to a meeting to show a client how far I am with their project - opened the lid and the system resumed from hibernation - just where I left it a fortnight ago - no issues.

While all this is not very helpful - it does tell us that it is an issue local to your system and configuration.

The resume settings on this system equals yours - but my system is using nouveau driver instead of Nvidia

[fh@lion ~]$ cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf | grep HOOKS=\"
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block keyboard keymap consolefont resume filesystems fsck"
[fh@lion ~]$ cat /etc/default/grub | grep GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet resume=UUID=d9c6ab8f-c338-4e7d-a4a4-3c07b6068b2e  udev.log_priority=3"

So I think you limit your troubleshooting to how you get the Nvidia driver to play nice with hibernation.

For these BIOS ACPI errors, I came across forum posts with similar errors. People advised that they are pretty common (vendors to blame), and generally do not matter. In my case, not so sure.

Okay, will try that. By the way, I did try stuff with KMS and modules in initramfs (Power management/Suspend and hibernate - ArchWiki), but no luck.

Hmm seems possible. Will look around.

Yes I have tried this manual test. Always boots up like a normal shutdown.

Yeah seems like it. I’ll try switching the drivers.

Got it. Thanks a lot!
