Headphones not functional on reboot until unplugged and re-plugged

Hi,

Have been away for a week, came back to a lot of package updates. All is good after the updates except for one thing - when I reboot my computer I have to unplug my headphones then plug them back info them to work.

The headphones in question appear as Headphones (Family 17h (Models 10h-1fh) HD Audio Controller Analog Stereo) in the list, if that helps.

Do you set the device as the default one in the audio settings?

Hi - yep, they’re usually the default, but they don’t appear in the list at all now until I unplug and re-plug them

Do you have the same command output as you pasted above, when you run the command before unplugging/replugging the device? Maybe reboot and compare (or post here) the inxi command output?

This may be the cause of your problem

Simple mixer control 'Auto-Mute Mode',0

Auto-mute is useful on a laptop for muting built-in speakers when headphones are plugged in
but on a desktop system, or if headphones are left plugged in a user would usually not want anything muted

to change the setting to disabled, use this command

amixer --card=0 sset 'Auto-Mute Mode' Disabled

then check in amixer -c0 again to see if both 'Headphone' and 'Front' are still [on]

and finally, save ALSA settings so it remains disabled when system is booted

sudo alsactl store

When auto-mute is disabled in ALSA, Pulseaudio will show both output ports but will not show if they are plugged-in or unplugged

Hi, just rebooted my computer & ran the two diagnostic info commands, then the commands to disable auto mute, then the diagnostics again. Sound still did not work after doing this:

Data posted following ‘Sound still did not work after doing this’ is showing ‘Auto-Mute Mode’ is still set to ‘Enabled’

but in the 2nd data listing is showing control item is ‘Disabled’
