Headphones are causing media to randomly pause and play

I originally tried to fix this by disabling mpris controls in the firefox settings however it has continued to happen. My current theory is that this is due to the button on my headphones that controls volume and can pause/play media as originally this was also changing volume which i was unable to unbind and im wondering if the same can be done for these media controls

Welcome to Manjaro Forum @Picklethecow6

Please post more information about system

inxi -v8z

If you are using Bluetooth headphones with multimedia controls, please also advise make and model number of headphones and post more information about systemd bluetooth.service

systemctl status bluetooth.service

It’s always recommended to post full output, as there can be other things in there which may influence things; also to use three backticks ``` on their own lines above and below the pasted output, for proper code formatting, so it appears like this:

Cheers!

I wonder if the headphones’ control buttons are getting a bit “sticky”? Do these do the same with other devices?

i havent tried any other devices but when i unplug the device it stops immediately so its definitely associated to this. might also be important that im using an adapter to allow me to plug in via usb because my headphone jacks are really unreliable

Thanks! What I really meant though, re. devices, is that the headphones may have the same effect when using with e.g. a phone … or maybe in a Live Session (USB boot), or another OS if you have one installed?

It has the same effect on windows 10 havent tried anything else though

That does point the finger to a hardware issue.

Perhaps the “springiness” has gone on the switches (do these still seem to press in and release OK?) or some contaminant has got in there causing an intermittent contact.

If they are still under warranty I’d investigate that, or (if you know how to disassemble them without doing a “BG-Special™” on them) some switch contact cleaner/lubricant may help.

The headphones themselves seem fine, I wonder if it may be an issue with the adaptor I’m using?

Could well be the adaptor; if you can manage a reasonably stable connection with the built-in jack(s), does the issue happen there?

Maybe a squirt of Servisol (or whatever brands you have) will help there too, but sometimes it’s the solder joints which fail with the mechanical stresses. These can be re-flowed too, though.

I don’t actually know how to connect them with the audio jack i think i’m missing some specific drivers, weirdly though it only messes with my media sometimes and then when i unplug it and plug it back in it fixes for a bit

Judging by the age of the machine it’s not unlikely that contaminants have got in the ports, oxidation, cracked solder joints etc. — the machine I’m typing this on is about 6 years older than that, and I’m having intermittent issues with the USB ports here (and the power jack :warning: which I REALLY need to fix!).

well all the other usb ports work and i switch where i connect my headphones often that was actually the reason i got an adapter because my headphone jacks were messed up

I think i now know what is causing the problem it seems that the usb is disconnecting and reconnecting causing it to pause and the play, I wonder if there is a way to disable this feature?

Strangely today, any media refuses to play unless i unplug and then plug in the USB

You probably have some power savings rule active that puts your USB ports to sleep. On a laptop, that might make sense, but on a desktop system, it doesn’t.

Check your power savings settings.

i dont see anything in the power saving settings but strangely if one application is playing audio now it doesn’t recognise any other applications playing audio might be related to why media doesn’t play

That tells me pulseaudio isn’t properly configured, because pulseaudio is what allows multiplexing sound from multiple sources.

But I’m afraid I’m going to have to leave that into the hands of @nikgnomic — he’s the audio specialist around here.

I just restarted my system and it’s allowing me to multiplex sound now but i don’t know how long this will last

Hmm… I would suggest editing /etc/pulse/default.pa and commenting out the line that reads…

load-module module-suspend-on-idle

Save the file — you will be asked for a password because you need elevated privileges for that — and then run…

sudo pactl unload-module module-suspend-on-idle

See if this helps.
