HDMI to TV shows a blank screen

When I plug in my TV through HDMI, the TV is just blank. In the display settings the display mode is Mirror. When I try to change it to Join Displays my laptop screen blinks and goes back to login. When I log in it goes back as if nothing happened. TV is still blank, display settings goes back to Mirror.

Please refer to your TV’s manual and fix the resolution to something (I.E. probably turn off “auto-negotiation” somewhere in its settings) because what is probably happening is the TV asking the Display adapter: “What resolution do you want” and the display adapter asking “What resolution can you give?” and the TV responding “What resolution do you want” and the display adapter asking “What resolution can you give?” and the TV responding … ad infinitum.

Which is great if you want to watch HD and SD TV channels and the TV auto-switching resolutions on the go, but not so good when hooking up a computer…

:sob:

Thanks for the suggestion but the TV doesn’t have any options like that.

Then you cannot use it as a monitor…

Having said that, as you did not provide much information, it could be a number of things, so please read this:

and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…

and provide at least the output to:

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host
xrandr

(Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)

:innocent:

P.S. If you enter a bit more details in your profile, we can also see which Desktop Environment you’re using, which CPU/GPU you have, …

Apologies for the lack of info. Here’s what I have:

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host

You have both nVidia and AMD drivers loaded:

  Display: x11 server: X.org 1.20.8 compositor: gnome-shell
  driver: amdgpu,ati,nvidia unloaded: modesetting,nouveau

Which one are you using and how do you switch between those (as I’m unfamiliar with such a setup) as a Lenovo Legion 5 drives its HDMI port through the nVidia only…

The TV seems to be connected, so it’s not a cabling issue:

    HDMI-1-0 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 1063mm x 598mm

With the hybrid drivers it’s supposed to switch between both automatically. So I would assume that the AMD GPU is being used unless I run a program with prime-run then it switches to the Nvidia GPU like I do with games.

Is there a way to tell which one is being used at any given moment?

That’s the issue: IIRC the HDMI port on a Lenovo is driven by the nVidia card only, so you need to “switch” to nVidia only to have the TV work as the TV is hooked up to the HDMI port…

As I’m running in pure nVidia mode, I can only:

  • point you to the Reverse PRIME article
    OR
  • I can help you get rid of the AMD driver and run in pure nVidia mode which doesn’t pose any of these problems and the way I’m running as I like simplicity…

:innocent:

Bummer. I guess I’ll have to look for other options. But thanks anyway for your help.

Looking at the names of the monitors, I’d say reverse prime is active. Can you share the output of xrandr --listproviders?

I don’t think removing the AMD driver is particularly helpful. An appropriate Xorg configuration could achieve the same thing without removing anything.

It’s the way I run and have never had any issues (except less battery life if I push the nVidia really hard) but it’s up to the OP to decide which kind of solution he/she prefers…

As expected, “reverse PRIME” is active. Can you try to connect the TV again, and after it goes to login, please share the Xorg logs which are in ~/.local/share/xorg/?

I’m kind of confused about Reverse Prime. Does that mean that the system is using the Nvidia GPU by default? If so, how can I make it so that the default is the AMD? Also, if Reverse Prime is active, it doesn’t seem to affect games that I run with prime-run.

It means that the AMD GPU does the rendering, but it is possible to pass the image through the nvidia GPU to an external display. So both GPUs are active, but the nvidia one isn’t really doing anything, just taking and image, and sending it out via its output(s).

Ok, I got confused. I thought Reverse Prime would be the opposite. And just to be sure, prime-run will force the Nvidia to be used right?

Yes.

Now that I look at the Xorg log… it seems the nvidia X driver is not installed. That’d explain the issue. Are you sure that’s the latest log you have? What’s the output of sudo mhwd -li?

When I looked at ~/.local/share/xorg/ I used the Xorg.1.log file. The other one is Xorg.1.log.old so I assume that’s the latest. I even shutdown before starting up, logging back in and looking at the log. When I installed the drivers I just used the Auto Install Proprietary Driver in the Manjaro Settings Manager.

sudo mhwd -li

Also, should I be concerned about the warning about no installed USB configs?

Could you run pacman -Ss nvidia | grep installed. And I don’t think you should be worried about the “no USB configs”.
