HDMI audio no longer working, device detected but profile is Off

Sorry for having to open yet another issue today, the major update seems to have broken a couple of things. While audio is working well on all my other devices, it abruptly stopped functioning on my mother’s computer. Upon inspection I found that it’s no longer detecting HDMI audio for the monitor which is what she uses. This is her graphics card model as reported by Wayland:

Device: AMD Radeon R7 370 Series (radeonsi, pitcairn, LLVM 17.0.6, DRM 3.57, 6.9.0-1-MANJARO) (0x6811)

Interestingly the Plasma sound manager does see the device fine: It just lacks a configuration profile. I’m essentially only given the off option, which makes me think either its config broke or I’m missing a package for it that got uninstalled.

But I might guess … try a different kernel?
Namely 6.1 LTS or 6.6 LTS.

As root:

Booted kernel 6.6 LTS: Exact same issue. This didn’t happen until the update today, the machine was on 6.8 for weeks, definitely not the kernel then.

nikgnomic: “As root” data deleted - audio information was incomplete and not needed anyway

I remember this issue in my computer with Caicos HDMI Audio (ATI 7450) time ago. The problem appeared more frequently when the computer went into power saving mode. Each time the audio went off, entering Konsole and executing “pa-info” returned it to normal.

I made some tests but never discover the solution. Instead of that, changed from pulseaudio to pipewire and the problems disappeared.

Thanks. Might try that command later and see what it does. For now I put the normal speakers back in, they sound better compared to speakers built into the monitor anyway.

Please post more information about audio cards and profiles detected in PulseAudio

pactl list cards

If data shows HDMI audio profiles in addition to Off profile issue may be with KDE audio GUI only
If so, install pavucontrol-qt for KDE

pamac install pavucontrol-qt

and it should be possible to change the Profile in Configuration tab - pavucontrol --tab=5
pavucontrol can also lock the card profile in PulseAudio

If no additional HDMI profiles are shown in data, please post more information about audio playback devices detected in ALSA

aplay -l

pa-info uses multiple pactl commands to dump a lot of diagnostic data for PulseAudio, and also runs alsa-info.sh to dump a lot of data for ALSA. Too much data to post on here, and most of it would not be helpful for debugging this.

I would not expect a diagnostic command to change the state of a software audio server if the profiles are absent, But if the HDMI sinks were present and suspended it might be de-suspending them
If that was the case it could be resolved by disabling module-suspend-on-idle in PulseAudio

Thanks! Might look at pavucontrol-qt a bit later, I remember using it in the past for unrelated tweaks. Currently ran the diagnosis you suggested via SSH, here’s their results in the meantime… pa-info is a bit too long so I’ll likely have to capture that one on pastebin later.

PulseAudio data shows 6 HDMI outputs but they are not available and there is no indication of which
output is connected to the monitor
Plasma audio settings GUI must be showing available profiles only
pavucontrol would show profiles as (unplugged)(unavailable)

ALSA data is also showing 6 HDMI outputs with no connections to a monitor
(see data from another recent post showing HDMI devices detected in ALSA correctly)

I suggest you check HDMI outputs are not muted in ALSA mixer

alsamixer --card=HDMI

But it is more likely a problem with the cable connection to the Monitor
I suggest you try using a different HDMI / DisplayPort output on the GPU
and a different cable

pavucontrol shows several profiles for the HDMI card, but they all appear as disconnected. This would explain why the device is shown but off is the only option: It must be seeing the device as disconnected for some reason.

Could this have anything to do with the living room TV being connected to the computer? That’s plugged into the HDMI port while the monitor is connected via DisplayPort. I didn’t suspect it as the TV is both powered off and disabled in the Display settings, perhaps even in stand-by it’s stealing the signal and confusing the newer kernel? I’ll try with it plugged out later.

IMO it is unlikely the TV is stealing audio from the monitor when neither device is detected in ALSA

If the monitor is detected correctly with TV disconnected, It might also be possible to get monitor audio detected and working again by muting the alsamixer output to TV
